Mary Cohoe Obituary

COHOE--Tina. Mary Leen "Tina" Cohoe passed away Aug. 15, 2023 at age 69 after 16 years with Alzheimer's disease, which tragically struck in her prime at 53. Tina was a charismatic, successful direct-marketing executive for a quarter century, rising to group creative director at Ogilvy & Mather Direct, then president of FCB Direct's New York office and CEO of DotGlu, returning to OgilvyOne briefly before her illness. Tina had art and design in her blood. She grew up in the Detroit suburb of Lake Orion, Mich., the daughter of Chrysler car designer Andrew Wilson Cohoe and high-school art teacher Blossom Gam Cohoe. She majored in art at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1975, and immediately headed to New York to join her brother John in the design field. She first worked at Moneysworth magazine and briefly freelanced at MBA Communications before joining Playboy magazine's NYC ad sales office. She joined Ogilvy in 1979. Her agency clients included AT&T, American Express, Kenworth Trucks, the U.S. Postal Service, Book-of-the-Month Club and Ameritrade. She helped launch the AT&T Merlin business phone amid the phone system breakup, reintroduced Gevalia coffee for General Foods, and even got drawings for Quality Paperbacks from a pre-"Simpsons" Matt Groening. She was also active in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It was at MBA Communications that she met her husband, journalist Randall Smith, who survives her along with their two sons Will and Jack, Will's daughter Clara, Jack's wife Cassidy, Tina's siblings John and Christine and John's wife Laurie Baker, and longtime home aide Dorita Joseph. A memorial gathering will be held in October.

I am so sorry to hear of Tina's passing. I had the great pleasure of meeting the family through Blossom. Both bright, kind, impressive true stars and greatly missed. The heavens are brighter...and there is consolation in knowing they are together. With fond memories,

Tina, I so regret not physically being at your service, but I hope you´ll be able to feel the love, admiration and respect I´ve had for you ever since I joined O&MD in the early 1980´s.
What you never knew, is when I graduated CMU, a former design professor suggested I find someone to model and emulate! I wasn´t exactly sure what that meant until I heard your quick witted tongue and saw you in your olive green Neru jacket/suit and riding boots. Then I KNEW. That timid, new junior art director, sitting at a drawing table perched in the hall on 42nd and Third was me. You were to be my mentor and friend, and for that, I am forever grateful.

Tina was a smart and inspirational leader of our creative department of probably 50 people at FCB. And the remarkable thing was she commanded all of our respect through not only her talent and vision (like other creative directors), but also through kindness. I never heard her raise her voice or berate anyone. She handled everything with such grace and dignity. I am so happy to have known her.

Tina was a beloved and brilliant creative director. I feel very fortunate to have worked with her - first at Ogilvy Direct and later at FCB Direct. She was a working mother who didn't stint either her work or her family. As one myself, I know she defended me early on when a Creative Director complained that he liked everything about me but that I had to leave at 6 for my son. Tina said, "Being a mother is part of what makes Chris a terrific writer". Could anyone have a better, smarter defender and friend. I miss her.
