MATTHEW ROLLBERG

ROLLBERG--Matthew James "Matt" 87, of St. Simons Island, GA, died October 24 at his home, due to complications of old age. After a very healthy life, everything went wrong in his late eighties. He was born in Manhattan and lived there, and for a few years in Chicago, until he graduated from Stephens Institute of Technology in 1957. He engineered Department of Defense projects until he worked for Columbia University, where he also obtained a graduate degree there in engineering management. He then achieved his goal as an environmental engineer, working in the U.S. and internationally. One of his significant accomplishments was cleaning Lake Superior of asbestos caused by a Canadian copper producer. Matt was a member of Cedar Point Yacht Club, Westport, CT. He owned sailboats and won races for more than 50 years. With his boat, aptly named Andante, he raced many seasonal yacht races in Long Island Sound -- Larchmont, American, Indian Harbor, and Greenwich -- as well as Block Island race week. Matt and his wife, Margaret, retired early to race and cruise the world on Santana. Matt loved Broadway, classical music, jazz and Tony Bennett. Matt is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Reichenbach; three children, Jim, also Matthew James, Kathleen Boldt and Jennifer Robinson; and seven grandchildren, Aryn and Hannah Rollberg, Michael, Caroline and Kai Buldt and Kathryn and Abby Robinson. Matt was a loving man with dignity. His last sailboat cruise will place his ashes on the Atlantic at St. Simons Island.
