MAUREEN CARR Obituary

CARR--Dr. Maureen A., passed away February 11, 2025, in State College, PA at the age of 85. Beloved daughter of Bernard Martin Carr and Emily Urbach Carr and sister of Bernard Thomas Carr, she is survived by her sister-in-law Brenda Daley Carr of Annandale, VA. She was "Aunt Maureen" to Bernard L. (Laurie), Elizabeth C. Mora (Michael), Emily, and Ellen, as well as to her grandnephews and nieces David, Caitlin, Ann, Nicolas, Emily, Cosmo, Grace, Brynn, and Kash. She is also survived by many dear cousins, other family members, colleagues, neighbors, and caretakers. Born in Teaneck, NJ, Dr. Carr received her high school diploma from the Academy of Saint Aloysisus, her BA in Music from Marywood College 1961, her MFA in music theory from Rutgers (The State University) 1964, and her PhD in Music Theory from the University of Wisconsin 1972. Appointed to Penn State in 1979, Dr. Carr was the Founding Director of the Penn State School of Music. She previously held faculty positions at Westminster Choir College and Montclair State University. A preeminent authority on the music of Igor Stravinsky, her knowledge came straight from the source: 27 visits over 31 years to Basel, Switzerland to examine Stravinsky archives in the Paul Sacher Stiftung. Dr. Carr wrote six books, with an additional monograph, After Apollo: Stravinsky's Path Through the Models of Bach (1929-1965), forthcoming from Oxford University Press. A beloved teacher, Dr. Carr taught generations of Penn State students in basic musicianship, advanced analysis, and upper-level seminars in music theory. In service to the profession, Dr. Carr was on the Society for Music Theory Publication Awards Committee. A Distinguished Professor of Music at Penn State University, Dr. Carr taught there for more than 45 years and retired in June 2024 as Professor Emerita. Public viewing is February 24, 5-7pm at Koch Funeral Home, State College. Funeral Mass is February 25, 10:30am at Our Lady of Victory with a reception immediately following the service. Burial will be February 28, 1pm at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider directing gifts to support either the School of Music through the Maureen Carr Endowment for Music Theory and Musicology Research or Penn State Catholic Campus Ministry. Gifts can be made online via https://raise.psu.edu or by mailing a check, payable to "Penn State" to Donor and Member Services, 329 Innovation Blvd, Suite 311, State College, PA 16803 and include "In memory of Maureen Carr School of Music Endowment" or "In memory of Maureen Carr Catholic Campus Ministry" in the memo line. Dr. Carr´s research on the music of Igor Stravinsky further my wisdom and understanding of Histoire du Soldat, his music for dance, Opera, and the symphonic repertoire, for this and so many other reasons my wife and I are grateful and honored to have known Maurine from the day she hired me at Penn State and throughout the decades since that time. Dr. Carr, was the most gracious, thoughtful, and understanding Director who guided the school of music with grace, thoughtfulness, and compassion. I will continue to truly carry her memory fondly in my heart. Respectfully,
