Hey Meyer, I always had to wait for you to drive me home. PNHP just let me know you were already on your way there. We will speak your name on this election day. 2life, Caryn

Meyer was my oldest cousin on the Shugarman (his mother's maiden name).
We knew him as Sonny in the old days.
I remember him best for his courage and high principles when he left to fight for the Hagannah when the State of Israel was founded.

Meyer -- my oldest -- dearest -- most revered friend. I miss you -- I'll miss you -- Say, Hi, to Stan for us. We are all less, without you.

• Of all the hundreds of people I have met since I entered the world of health care advocacy in 1992, Meyer stood out. He was not merely a political acquaintance. He was also a person. We agreed on nothing. We talked about everything. I was supposed to meet him at a public event on a Saturday in July. I was too ill to go or pick up the phone to say I would not be there. My phone rang at 9 am the following Monday morning. “Where were you? Are you all right?” I apologized. He was concerned about me, and gave no hint of what was to come. “What’s it like to be 80?” I asked. We laughed and exchanged jokes. It was the last time we spoke. Meyer was infallibly courteous, gracious, cheerful, generous and fair. Frater, ave atque vale.

Meyer was a wonderful man, the rare soul who not only loved humanity but loved people. He was inspiring by his understanding and dedication to many causes. But I am only now understanding his deep dedication to Zita as well, and how profoundly he stood up for his friends. He remains an ennobling model, and I will strive to live up to his example.

Your professional knowledge of the health care industry combined with your passion for social justice made you a particularly effective advocate for universal health care. You brought these qualities into the political arena both in your activism in health care advocacy organizations such as Physicians for a National Health Plan and the Metro NY Health Care for All Campaign, and in progressive local politics with the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats. I met you in 1994 in the Brooklyn Single Payer Coalition, working for single payer universal health care, and I was honored to participate with you for years in support of progressive candidates and issues in CBID. Your personal qualities made you beloved by those who knew you.

There are those beloved Democrats of the past who have been dubbed "the Happy Warriors"- Smith, Humphry, Wellstone- all national figures; but, I feel that on our local scene, Meyer even though he never ran for office, was Brooklyn's "Happy Warrior". I will miss this guy.
