BENNETT-- MICHAEL V.L. It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Michael V.L. Bennett, D.Phil., our distinguished professor emeritus in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience and emeritus holder of the Sylvia and Robert S. Olnick Chair in Neuroscience. He was 92. A former chair of the department, Mike was among the founders of the field of neuroscience who pioneered the investigation of intercellular communication within the nervous system. Thanks to his leadership and influence, Einstein became and remains world renowned for the study of gap junctions. His many contributions to the field led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1981. Mike was a beloved mentor, teacher, and colleague, deeply committed to training future physician-scientists and researchers. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dr. R. Suzanne Zukin, who also is a longtime, beloved Einstein colleague. Mike will be missed but his impact on neuroscience and our institution will live on through those who follow him.
