MICHAEL MADISON Obituary

MADISON--Michael Thomas. Michael Thomas Madison, a beloved husband, father, and accomplished legal mind, passed away on October 1st at 83. Born on May 11, 1941, in Washington, D.C., Michael's journey from poverty to a distinguished career in law was a testament to his resilience and deep love for his mother and twin brother Martin. Michael was determined to rise above his circumstances. His devotion to education led him to graduate from George Washington University in 1963 and later earn his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1966. He served as a Professor of Law at William & Mary from 1972-1979 and Fordham Law School from 1979-2009. He was proud of his published works including three casebooks and treatises used by thousands of law students. Throughout his life, he remained committed to justice, equity, and making a difference in the lives of those around him. He cherished the memory of his late mother Thelma Madison, who shaped his values and instilled in him the strength to overcome adversity. His disabled fraternal twin brother whom Michael fought to protect his entire life, Martin James Madison, also predeceased him, leaving Michael with a deep sense of familial connection that he carried throughout his life. He was a staunch defender of Israel and a proud Jew, tempered, as he would phrase it, with an affinity towards Buddhist principles. Michael is survived by his loving wife, Marcia Bernstein, his devoted partner in life, and his beloved dogs. He also leaves behind his ex-wife, Terry Mizrahi, with whom he shared two children, Eve Madison Rodsky and Joshua Madison. He instilled a love of tennis in his son Joshua. Recently, Michael fulfilled a lifelong dream by completing his memoir, The Traveler, a reflective work that chronicles his incredible life journey. To honor his memory, his family encourages the purchase of The Traveler, with certain proceeds going to the Berkshire Humane Society, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of kindness, perseverance, and love will continue to live on through his family and his life's work. Rest in peace, Michael Thomas Madison.

Michael and my husband, Lorenzo Marinelli, were dear friends. I was saddened to learn of the death of this good man. Larry took great pleasure in his company. My deepest sympathy to Marcia.

I'm so sorry for your loss. While I did not know Michael personally, I know he was a wonderful man. What a rich history! I trust his legacy will live on. Where might we find The Traveler memoir? I looked but no luck.
