MONIQUE KNOWLTON Obituary

KNOWLTON--Monique. Monique Knowlton, art dealer, avid collector and VOGUE cover model. Monique (nee Monica Graebener) was born in 1937, in Karlsruhe, Germany and died peacefully at home in New York City on October 8, 2024 after a long battle with breast cancer. Monique's early years were shaped by the turmoil of WWII, but she emerged resilient and determined. At just 17, she moved to Paris, where she married and started a modeling career under her new name, Monique Chevalier. From the 1950s to the 1960s, Monique appeared on dozens of international magazine covers, such as VOGUE, Elle, and Glamour, eventually becoming one of Glamour's first 'models of the year.' Her career flourished, working with renowned photographers like Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Karen Radkai. She is perhaps best known for her work with Bert Stern and the hairdresser Kenneth. (Years later, Monique would team up with Stern again, hosting one of his first photography exhibitions at her art gallery). As one of her fans wrote, "The key to Monique Chevalier's long, successful modeling career lay in her ability to be anyone, from anywhere; All- American girl-next-door or haughty grande dame, ice queen or playful ingenue...every picture she took came stamped with an imperiously confident gaze." Eileen Ford recognized Monique's talent and recruited her to the Ford Modeling Agency, helping her move to New York at the age of 25. Monique's passion for art led her to open the Monique Knowlton Gallery in New York City during the vibrant 1970s art scene, where she championed emerging artists, including the Betye Saar. Her commitment to showing women artists earned her recognition on the Guerilla Girls "Hit List" for 1981-82. The New York Times praised the gallery many times, once describing it as "a hospitable haven, in which to be outrageous counts as a plus," in a 1971 review of her show "Invitational: New in New York." In the 1990s she re-opened in Soho. She would often say that in art, 'it must be different before it can be good.' Beyond her career, Monique was an avid collector with a discerning eye. Her collections ranged from antique quilts and mid-century Italian glass to contemporary photography and rare antique toys, eventually becoming one of the largest private toy collectors. Monique is preceded in death by her two eldest daughters, Kathy and Stephanie. She is survived by her children Emily Hunsicker, Will Sterns, Stefan Sterns, and Olivia Walton, as well as her nine beloved grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy. Monique always gave generously, sponsoring dozens of children from Appalachia to South America to Sudan, sending birthday and Christmas gifts, and often corresponding with those she sponsored for years into adulthood. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Doctors Without Borders, reflecting Monique's compassionate spirit and global outlook.

I met Monique for the first time around 2010 or maybe 2012 when she purchased some toys from me & she asked me to help her build out her already great collection of vintage tin toys. We became friends & I was honored to visit her in her NYC apartment & I spent a few days as her guest in her East Hampton cottage. She was beautiful, charming, a great conversationalist, a story teller & a warm friend. I would bring her fabulous cheeses from the cheesemakers in VT where I live. I was saddened to hear of her passing recently. You will be missed by all of your friends in the toy collecting world, all of whom admired your determination to be a great collector. My condolences to her great extended family. May you rest in peace. Your friend in VT. Carl Lobel

I only met Monique 6 or 7 times, but I spoke with her on the phone many times... I worked at Wards Nursery in Gt. Barrington and tended the graves of her daughters, her mother-in-law and the Nanny for 40 some years. She was so attentive to making sure the graves had Seasonal Flowers and Christmas Wreaths. We sometimes had long conversations on the phone about grief of loss of loved ones. She once asked me if I thought it silly that she continued to have the graves decorated after all those years and I told her that when you lose a child it doesn´t matter how many years pass, the grief stays with you and that I did not think she was being silly at all. I will remember our conversations always...
She is with her daughters now, the love she had for them is for eternity. May she be at Peace.

A beautiful, cultured woman of extraordinary tastes and generosity.
Thank you Monica for some great memories. Give Rocko a hug for me.

Your hospitality and welcoming embrace will never be forgotten. Visits to East Hampton will never be the same.

Monique had one foot in the old world and the other in the new. She was compassionate, intelligent, creative, resilient and generous. She was beautiful and "feminine" but also fiercely independent. She balanced family with the demands of being an entrepreneur in a highly competitive field. We shared a love of fashion and discussed fashion as art. I remember a crisp sunny day when Monique, looking so chic, was clutching a copy of Vogue while we watched Olivia score a field hockey goal. I feel the loss.

Someone to be in awe of, Monique was a true global citizen by her very nature, nothing to do with politics, and a greater compliment isn't to be had. You leave a void Monique that others can't fill.

Monique was not only beautiful ...she had talent, intelligence, sensitivity and the ability to draw people together at her gallery. I was at the opening of Bert Sterns exhibition and saw her magical ability to welcome everyone into her space with grace. Rest in peace, a life well lived.
