Morton Dicker Obituary

1931 - 2022
Morton Barry Dicker, a resident of Harmony Village at CareOne, Moorestown, New Jersey for six years, died at age 91 on February 23, 2022. Previously, Morton was a long-time resident and active community member in White Meadow Lake in Rockaway, New Jersey.

Born in 1931 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York, Mort attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and graduated from City College of the City University of New York with a B.S. degree. Mort went on to pursue a law degree at University of Wisconsin-Madison where he met the love of his life and future wife, Joan Frances Weiser. After law school, Mort served in the military where he stationed in Germany for two years. Upon his return to the U.S.A., Mort started a long and distinguished career at the Legal Aid Society, where he rose to the position of Attorney-in-Charge of the Legal Aid Society's Park Place Office, NYC. He dedicated his 42-year career to protecting and defending the rights of everyday New Yorkers who could not afford representation for their civil legal problems. Mort was a relentless champion for his low income clients and a venerated role model and mentor to countless Legal Aid attorneys and pro bono lawyers. He developed deep expertise in Consumer Law and Bankruptcy Law. He instituted an internship program with New York Law School where he enthusiastically encouraged his students to spread the word about pro bono career opportunities.

In addition to his commitments to the Legal Aid Society, Mort was a passionate public servant devoted to his community. He was a member and officer of the Rockaway Township Lions Club and of the White Meadow Lake Property Owners Association. Mort also helped shape the growth and future of Rockaway Township when he served as Councilman and became a tenured member of the Rockaway Township Planning Board, rising to Chairman. He was an Honorary Association Member of the Birchwood Firehouse #4 where he spent many hours during retirement with his buddies, talking about current events and sharing stories about their families.

Mort and Joan were avid enthusiasts of live theatre, frequenting Broadway and supporting local productions throughout their lives. They instilled this same passion in their five children-Leslie, Stephanie, Mark, Andrea and Steven. Both Mort and Joan were also ardent readers – Mort favored legal thrillers and there wasn't a mystery novel Joan didn't read. They took particular delight in completing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, taking turns until it was done. They loved to travel and experience new things but cherished their time at home with family most.

Mort is survived by his children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Birchwood Firehouse Company #4, 4 Art Street, Dover, NJ 07801.
