MYLES BEHRENS Obituary

BEHRENS--Myles. The Department of Ophthalmology, Columbia University Irving Medical Center mourns the passing of Myles Behrens, M.D., retired Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief, Neuro-Ophthalmology Division, who was a brilliant clinician and outstanding educator for over five decades. His clinical intuition was unique and his mentorship of trainees was truly exceptional. He taught generations of fellows, residents and medical students who benefited from his wisdom and curiosity. He had a deep devotion to his patients and will be remembered for his encyclopedic mind, gentle guidance, and generosity. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Marsha, and to his family. I was a student at Columbia P&S, graduating in 1981. In my senior year I did a neuro- ophthalmology elective with Dr. Behrens, a true gentleman. A great teacher as well as a brilliant and compassionate physician. Working with him helped to cement my desire to become an ophthalmologist. I later trained at the Wills Eye Hospital and went on to a long and rewarding career in ophthalmology. Thank you Dr. Behrens. You will be missed.

I´m so sorry to hear Dr Behrens died. He was my first doctor to diagnose me with Optic Neuritis and Multiple Sclerosis in 1985. I even invited him to my big fat Greek wedding in 1990.

Dr. Behrens was a treasure. We met him when my son was initially diagnosed with NF2, and he was a steadfast voice in the chaotic waters we were in the midst of - his brilliance and low key manner are what kept us sane for so many years.

I worked with Dr. Behrens summers during college and then while in medical school. He thought that the eye was the window to the brain - and that guided my exploration of neuroscience; an to an eventual PhD. He will be missed. -Brad Poulos
