NANCY JOLINE Obituary

JOLINE--Nancy (Nicholson), passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Nancy was born in Bayside, New York in 1927 to Joseph and Olga Nicholson. She lived the first eighty years of her life on Long Island, more than fifty of those in Huntington. She was a graduate of Bayside High School and Barnard College. A lover of words, Nancy worked as a journalist at The Long Islander and authored educational textbooks for Educational Developmental Laboratories. Nancy was an enthusiastic crossword puzzle constructor. Her puzzles were frequently published in The New York Times, where she has been tied as a record holder since 1994 for the most words in a Sunday puzzle - 150. Crossword editor Will Shortz once described her clues as 'lively, precise and appropriately tough.' She especially loved playing Scrabble with her daughters and grandchildren. Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Everett S. Joline. She is survived by daughters Andrea Joliat (David), Sara Bedford (Henry) and grandchildren Louis and Nicholas Joliat and Martha and Oscar Bedford. She was overjoyed to meet her first great-grandchild Matilda Nancy Bedford two weeks before she passed away. Donations in her memory can be made to the Open Medicine Foundation: omf.ngo
