Natasha Richardson Obituary

RICHARDSON--Natasha. The board of trustees and staff of amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, mourn the sudden, tragic loss of our good friend and amfAR trustee Natasha Richardson. An ardent advocate of AIDS research, Ms. Richardson was an eloquent and persuasive spokesperson who generously contributed her time and resources to amfAR over a period of more than 15 years. She brought to our cause an exquisite combination of warmth, intelligence, drive, poise, and glamour. While her initial motivation for supporting AIDS causes was prompted by the death of her father from AIDS, it was clear that her abiding commitment was the product of her own deep-seated compassion for all people. Among many accomplishments, in 1999 she spearheaded Unforgettable: Fashion of the Oscars, an auction of Oscar dresses that raised more than $1.5 million. In November 2000, she was honored with amfAR's Award of Courage. In September 2006, Ms. Richardson joined amfAR's board of trustees, and most recently she was a featured speaker at the Foundation's annual New York Gala fundraiser on February 12, 2009. On that occasion, she spoke passionately about recent progress in AIDS research and voiced her optimism that a cure for AIDS will be found. Her radiant enthusiasm will be sorely missed by all at amfAR and by the HIV/AIDS community worldwide. Our hearts go out to Liam, the children, and the whole family. Kenneth Cole, Chairman of the Board, Mathilde Krim, Ph.D., Founding Chairman, Kevin Robert Frost, CEO.
