NED GILHOOLY Obituary

GILHOOLY--Ned. The Schilling and Gilhooly families mourn the passing of Ned Gilhooly, beloved husband of Joanie Schilling; blessed son of the late Joseph and Mickey Gilhooly; loving brother of John and Eileen and brother-in-law of Jim Doody and the late Mary Gilhooly; son-in-law of the late Helen and Jack Schilling; brother-in-law of Helen and Dave O'Neill, and Jack and Edie Schilling; beloved uncle to Teresa Gilhooly, Jacqueline, Eric, and Jack Wagner, Joe and the late Jessica Doody, and the 20+ Schilling, O'Neill, DiMeglio, Critcher, and Richards nieces and nephews who were blessed to call him Uncle Ned. Born January 22, 1953, Ned was raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where he met the love of his life, Joanie. They spent the last 44 happy years building a beautiful life together, first in Brooklyn and then in their beloved Montauk. Ned lived in the moment and loved watching beautiful sunsets on the beach with Joanie, taking care of his cherished '65 Corvette, and spending time with family and friends. He made those around him feel like old friends, and he brought a smile to the face of everyone he met. He and his wonderful sense of humor will be very missed, but all who loved Ned will always remember and hold on to the good times we shared until we meet again. May he rest in peace. Visitation Wednesday (February 16) from 3pm to 7pm at Clavin Funeral Home, 7722 4th Ave., Brooklyn. Funeral Mass Thursday (February 17) 10:30am at Saint Patrick R.C. Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Graveside service to be held in the springtime at Fort Hill Cemetery in Montauk, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ned's memory to: The Montauk Food Pantry (where Ned volunteered) www.Montauk FoodPantry.org or HeartShare Human Services of New York, www.HeartShare.org

Ned was one of the younger guys in our group who lived and played on 79th street and grew up into men there. Later in life Ned would tell stories of the people and places from that time in the old neighborhood. To everyone, Ned was their friend.
Rest In Peace old friend.

Words cannot describe how sorry we are for your loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers in your time of grief. We will never forget what a wonderful person Ned was. He was a colleague and a friend. He was always happy, full of life and made us laugh. We haven't seen Ned in quite a while but had recently been in touch. It was always a pleasure to speak with him and reminiscence of times gone by. Ned, my friend Rest in Eternal Peace. Larry & Barbara

i cant say anything about "edward" cause i only knew him as NED.
Ned and i grew up together on 79th street. he did not know me as henry tom (which is my real name) he called me Hank. im still hank, but only for my old friends from brooklyn. i lived up the street from him at 340 79st. he lived on the left hand side of the apt, called rose court? on the 1st or 2nd floor facing the street. his brother john was more my brothers age, (peter syrdahl) and his sister( Eileen) was often together hanging out at the gas station on the corner reading comics etc.
i moved to norway with my mom in 1972, after FHHS.. i meet NED a few times on some of my visits back to brooklyn , last time at Bubbles at my brothers stick ball game he has every year.
its been 2-3 years since i was on 79th st. and i like how it looks now, trees that were not there from the middle of the block towards 3rd ave. .... i miss bay ridge. had a good life there. a smile comes across my face when ever i find old pictures from that time, i know that somewhere i have a foto of me, doug( malone) and Ned outsde of my house during a winter , with snow etc. must be about 60 years old ,( i.m 68 )
i was informed of neds death from my brother who had heard it from his friend bill halvosen.
I'm sorry for your loss, i don't have too many of my old friends around me in norway, i always was happy when i meet old friends on my visit to brooklyn. now, i have one less to look for, he will be missed.
his old friend from 79th st. " Hank "henry tom syrdahl.
