NORMAN SUTIN

SUTIN--Norman, former Chair of the Chemistry Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and a leader in the study of electron-transfer reactions and energy storage schemes, died on January 31, 2022. Born in South Africa in 1928, he was married for more than 50 years to Bonita Sakowski (1933-2018); they had two children, Tony (1959-2002) and Cara (1962-1997). He is survived by two grandchildren, two nephews, four nieces, a daughter-in-law, and two sisters-in-law, as well as other family members. Dr. Sutin was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 1990. He was recognized for his discoveries concerning electron transfer reactions including their use in the study of biological reactions, artificial photosynthesis, and sensitizing semiconductors for use in solar energy devices. His scientific work was marked by modesty, rigor, and unique insight. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and scientific colleagues from around the world.
