PATRICIA STEWART Obituary
STEWART--Patricia Carry, of Gulf Stream, FL, and formerly of New York, NY and North Berwick, Scotland, died on August 10 at her home after a protracted illness at age 94. A groundbreaking businesswoman and a dedicated leader in education and numerous other civic and philanthropic endeavors, she was born in Brooklyn, NY. She was the widow of Charles Thorp Stewart to whom she was married for 31 years. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Daniel Van Buskirk of Peoria, IL, and is survived by two brothers, William James Carry Jr. of Sylvan Lake, MI and B. Peter Carry of New York, NY, two stepchildren, Jennifer J. Stewart of Falmouth, ME and C. Evan Stewart of New York, NY and one granddaughter, Charlotte Stewart, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was an alumna of Cornell University and also attended the University of Paris, France. Her business career started as a foreign correspondent for the Irving Trust Co. She then worked with economist Eliot Janeway before becoming a partner and then president of the New York Stock Exchange firm, Buckner & Co. She was one of the first two or three women to head a Wall Street firm. She subsequently was vice-president for finance and administration at the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. She served on the board of directors of Trans World Airlines, F.W. Woolworth Co., Continental Corporation, Borden Inc., Morton-Norwich Inc., Bankers Trust Co., CVS Corporation and New York City's Financial Services Corporation. She was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a number of New York and American Stock Exchange committees, including the New York Stock Exchange Pension Advisory Committee. She was one of the founders of the Foundation Financial Officers Group. She was a trustee and vice- chair of the Board of Trustees of both Cornell and the City University of New York, as well as a member of the visiting committee of the Graduate School of Business at Harvard University. She was also a director and chair of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin counties in Florida and of the Investor Responsibility Research Center. She served as director of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction. She was a strong supporter of women in whatever she did and served as a director of the NOW Legal Education and Defense Fund and the Women's Forum. She was also co-founder of the President's Council of Cornell Women. She received awards for her contributions to the City of New York, for her work with women and for her accomplishments in business. She belonged to and served on the boards of the Country Club of Florida in the Village of Golf, FL and the St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach, FL. She also belonged to the Little Club in Gulf Stream, FL and the Gullane, North Berwick and Dunbar gulf clubs in Scotland. A memorial service will be held in the fall at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Delray Beach.
