PAUL HERMAN Obituary
HERMAN--Paul R. We have lost our darling Paul, our family patriarch. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Paul passed away peacefully at home at age 87 with his beloved wife, Malka, and his devoted children, Murry and Tali at his bedside. Paul grew up in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, along with his twin brother, Howard. They both adored and were adored by their loving older sister, Lovey Beer. Paul was a voracious learner and had a lifelong passion for Judaism. Throughout his life he was always concerned for the other person instead of himself. He not only was a "tzaddik," a righteous person, but the exemplar of "mensch." After graduating from Midwood High School, Paul graduated near the very top of his class at both Columbia College and Columbia Law School. At the College he was awarded the honor of Junior Phi Beta Kappa and at the Law School, in addition to being on its prestigious Law Review, he was both a Harlan Fiske Stone and James Kent Scholar. After graduating from law school, Paul served as Law Clerk to one of the great judges to sit on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Harold R. Medina. Paul then went to work as an associate at the law firm of Root, Barrett, et al and after about five years he moved his practice to Herrick, Feinstein. Just like his own parents, Murry and Miriam (Mickey), Paul and Malka loved and honored one another always and forever. They were the driving force behind keeping our family traditions and sharing stories. Paul and Malka hosted family celebrations and Jewish holidays for the Herman and Beer families and were thrilled and overjoyed when their children, Murry and Tali were born. They were the most wonderful and loving parents any child would have been blessed to have. Similarly, after Tali and her husband, Josh Newman, became parents of Mickey, Ella, and Abby, Paul and Malka looked forward to every moment they could spend time with each of their grandchildren and made sure that each grandchild developed a special relationship with their "Saba," Paul. Paul's children are so grateful to their mom Malka, truly an Eishet Chayil, for the tender, sweet and loving care she showered on Paul throughout their marriage and particularly in recent months, when Paul was disabled by illness. In addition to Malka, Murry (Ana), Tali (Josh), and his grandchildren, Paul is survived by his devoted and loving sister Lovey Beer (alas, Paul's twin brother, Howard, passed away many years ago), Arline Herman, Howard's wife, and Paul's nieces and nephew, Rachel Scheff and her husband, Andy, and Ingrid Beer, Michele Beer Chazkel and her husband, Richard, and James Beer. Funeral services will take place Friday, June 7, 2024 at 11:00am at Congregation Ahavath Torah, 240 Broad Avenue, Englewood, NJ. Burial to follow at 2:00pm at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Glendale, Queens, NY. Shiva information will soon be available by calling the Synagogue at 201-568-1315.
