Paul Legvold Obituary

1946 - 2017
Paul Allen Legvold died peacefully at home in Dallas, Texas on September 20, 2017, of complications from prostate cancer. By his side were his husband of thirty-five years, Patrick Day, his nephew, Parker Day and his two rescue dogs. Paul was born on New Year's Day in 1946. He grew up in Los Angeles and received a BS and MBA from the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. Paul served in Vietnam and was stationed at Camp Long in South Korea. He began his career at Dean Whitter in San Francisco, later moving to New York to join Brown Brothers Harriman. He was the head of Investment Management Sales and Client Services at Brown Brothers for fourteen years. He then moved to Bankers Trust, where he was a Managing Director- Head of Institutional Sales. In 1998 Paul joined Wilshire Associates as a Senior Managing Director. In 2000 he joined Heidrick and Struggles, where he was Partner in Charge in their Asset Management Practice for the next ten years. He finished his career at Korn Ferry International as Managing Partner for their Global Asset Management division. Paul was a member of the California Club in Los Angeles, The Links Club and The Metropolitan Opera Club in New York. He served on the Executive Board of the Betty Ford Center and on September 11, 2017, celebrated thirty-fours years of sobriety. Paul had many passions: opera, Porsches, architecture, travel, dogs, friends and Patrick. Paul had a deep appreciation for Porsches that began in college with his first 911, spanned his life and concluded with his ridiculous 911 GT3. He lived in a number of remarkable architectural homes, including one designed by the renowned firm of Pereira and Luckman, the Firestone Estate. Paul and Patrick's favorite home was one designed by LA architect Edward Grenzbach, which sat hillside, overlooking the California desert. One of the joys Paul took in living in these homes was their suitability for entertaining. A fabulous cook, he and Patrick hosted dinner parties for friends from all over the world, benefits and architectural tours. Paul had a special gift for connecting with people and a genuine interest in supporting others. A dear friend of Paul's summed up his life so well when he said, "Paul was my inspiration for so many things, and I admired how well he lived his life. Sober for 34 years, husband, world traveler, friend of Presidents, investor, donor, real estate and architectural buff/restorer, dog lover, opera enthusiast, amazing cook and so very smart, reasonable and wise. He fought cancer just how he lived his life, with immense courage and love for those who will be left without him." Paul was an active member of St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue and his remains will be housed in its columbarium. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Paul's memory to the The Humane Society of Dallas County at www.dognkittycity.org.

Uncle Paul was a good man and he is gone too soon. I'm lucky he shared so much of his time and interests with me. He taught me how to drive a stick shift in one of his Porsches. He took me to my first opera, and to opening night at the Met. Patrick and him took me on trips around the world, sharing memories that we'll have forever. That's how Paul was, he always wanted to share what he had with those he cared about. I love you Paul. Thank you for all the influence you have had on my life and for helping raise me to be who I am today. I love you Patrick.

What an amazing man Paul was. So kind and smart and honest. He left the world a better place by gracing it with his presence. Patrick and Paul had a love to be envious of. See you on the other side my friend....

To the Legvold Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
