PAUL VARLEY

VARLEY--H. Paul, Jr., 84, of Woodland Park, NJ, on December 15, 2015. Paul received a B.S Degree from Lehigh University in 1952, a M.A. Degree from Columbia University in 1961, and a Ph.D, from Columbia University in 1964. Paul was Professor Emeritus of Japanese History, Department of East Asian Languages and Culture at Columbia University, New York, from 1965 to 1993. Later he was the Sen Soshitsu XV Professor of Japanese Cultural History, Department of History, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, retiring in 2008. In 1996 he received The Order of the Rising Star, Gold Rays with Rosette, from the Government of Japan. Husband of Betty Jane (Geiskopf). Father of Sharyn Hennen, and the late Donna Lee Varley. Memorial Gathering Saturday 2-4pm at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, NJ.
