Peter B. Andrews Jr, TV Producer, Director and Nursing Home Ham, dies at 90
Peter B. "Ace" Andrews Jr., beloved father, husband and incorrigible performer, passed away on Feb. 3rd at 90 years of age. He graduated from Colgate University in 1952 with a B.A. in English. Peter was a longtime television producer and director, notably producing CBS's "The Guiding Light" for 16 years and directing the movie "The Pistol" about the life of basketball legend Pete Maravich. He helped start the soap "Another Life" on the Christian Broadcast Network, directed the PBS cooking show "Cucina Amore" with his daughter and producer Christy, and even produced videos for the US Army for a number of years. Later in life, he appeared with the Agape Roadshow in over 230 comic performances, mostly at nursing homes. He was not above donning an outrageous costume while singing and doing slapstick if it would get a laugh. In retirement he was also a beloved substitute teacher at local schools he'd once attended, regaling students with his priceless rendition of "Chiquita Banana".
Ace was known for his ebullient, creative spirit and effortless wit; notorious for corny humor and unapologetic hamminess. He was a talented artist, entertainer and athlete. He was a delightful and doting parent, full of imaginative games and stories, and often candy in his pockets. He enjoyed playing tennis and running barefoot through the parks near his Radburn, NJ home. He concocted sweet and funny cards for all occasions with doodles and poems and ingenious rhymes, sending handmade Christmas cards for 60 years. He is survived by his wife Christine, son Peter, daughters Christine, Jennifer, Kathleen and Nicole, and twelve grandchildren. He was an extraordinary man of sensitivity, kindness and fun, with his huge heart lightly and joyfully worn on his sleeve. He succeeded in making all he met laugh or smile, and for that he will be lovingly remembered.
A celebration of Peter's life will be held at a later date.
