Lehman. Longtime Philadelphia resident Peter Lehman Buttenwieser, a respected educator, passionate advocate for children, and major supporter of progressive causes, died Sunday, February 4 at his home. Mr. Buttenwieser was born in New York City on December 9, 1935, a son of the late Benjamin J. Buttenwieser and the late Helen Lehman Buttenwieser. Mr. Buttenwieser was kind and generous to people in the sorts of helping roles that are often overlooked, from housekeeping staff at hotels to parking valets to wait staff or to the UPS delivery person. This particular warmth was a defining trait. Similarly, he was a trusted friend, unstinting in his advice and attentiveness. He is survived by his wife, Terry Ann Marek, his daughters Sarah Buttenwieser, Julie Suh, and his stepdaughter Emily Edwards, his three sons-in-law, and his ten grandchildren; his two brothers, Lawrence and Paul; and his six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol Buttenwieser Loeb, in 1955. Memorial contributions may be made to Palliative Oncology at Penn Medicine.
