PETER GOURAS

GOURAS--Peter. The Department of Ophthalmology mourns the loss of Peter Gouras, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University for over 40 years, who passed away on January 8, 2021. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and proceeded into an illustrious career in clinical and basic eye research, first in the Neurosurgical Division at the National Institutes of Health and later in the National Eye Institute. He moved to Columbia University in 1978. Dr. Gouras was renowned in, among others, clinical electrophysiology of the retina, elucidation of color vision, and retinal transplantation for the treatment of degenerative diseases, all of which he was a true pioneer and leader with a lasting impact today as seen in many textbooks. His originality, passion, collegiality, and simple presence are missed. Our deepest condolences are extended to his wife, Ute Keppler-Gouras, and the entire family.
