Peter, even though I have not seen you since high school, you are one of my better memories of that time in my life. With all your brilliance and advantages, you were always a fine, decent, caring, upbeat guy. I'm sorry we didn't keep in touch, but I know you did well with the life you were given. My heart goes out to your family, and you will be sorely missed.

I would like to convey my profound condolences to Diana, to Jacob and Jonah, and to Peter's family. I attended Fieldston with Peter, and I remember a funny, smart young man. Please know that you and Peter are in my thoughts and prayers.

Although my recent contact with Peter was sparse, I have fond memories of him as a good friend from the years we spent together in high school, at the Fieldston School in Riverdale, NY.

Peter was outgoing, fun and a natural leader back then, without being overbearing. I also remember how kind and generous his parents, Louis and Lini, always were to me when I visited Peter. A lovely family. I understand that Louis passed away in 1999, and I have to extend my condolences to Lini, as it must be so hard to lose both Louis and Peter like this. I'd just like you to know that there are many people, including many that you probably do not know, who have fond memories of both of them as well as you, and wish you all the best.

Today, here in Central China, I just get the shocking news that Professor Peter Lipton passed away. He was my supervisor in 1990-1991. We both were new at Cambridge by then. I went there in late 1990 for M.Phil. Study. Peter joined the Cambridge Faculty in early 1991, after 5 years of teaching at Williams College, Massachusetts. I was his first graduate student at Cambridge. Since it was the first year for me to study in an Anglophone country, my English was poor. I posed a big challenge for him, I guess. Peter spent a lot of time for me, helped me to choose the research topics for four M.Phil. essays and M.Phil. Thesis, propose reference books and papers. I always handed in my drafts at the last moment. He always gave me the drafts back on time, full of corrections in English, comments on arguments and encouragements for the progress I made. I still keep the drafts on my shelf.
After my M.Phil., I went to Canada for PhD study. We have sporadic contacts. Sometime he complained to me that, to be the Chair for his department, he was left very little time for his own research. In 2003, I started my teaching career in philosophy in a university in central China, Peter always loom in my mind as my model. I visited Cambridge in Spring 2006. We had lunch together. We talked about Philosophy research and education in China. We also talked about our families. Peter spoke of his wife Diana, his sons Jacob and Janah, with impressive love and pride. He looked healthy and energetic. I sent him one of my recent papers two weeks ago, and have been expecting his unfailing comments and criticisms. What I get today is the shocking bad news. I am so sorry! I hope he will finally have a good rest in Heaven. He is survived not only by his wife and sons, but also by his students.

I knew Peter as both a colleague at the University of Cambridge and at King's College, and also as a fellow member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics in the UK. All those who knew him are terribly shocked by his very untimely death and will profoundly miss his intellect, warmth and general humanity - sincerest condolences to his family in New York and Cambridge.

I taught philosophy at Wesleyan University from 1972-1980. Peter took a number of my classes, starting in his first semester there, which was mine as well. I well remember his intelligence, honesty, kindness and all-round decency and the purity of his interest in continuing his study of philosophy and, in time, teaching it. I've followed his career over the years and have been gratified by his success in academia and philosophy. His was a life well lived. Please accept my condolences for your loss.
