PHILIP C. KRAUS

KRAUS--Philip C., a percussionist who worked with musicians from Leonard Bernstein to Ella Fitzgerald to the Drifters died January 13 in Houston, TX. He was 93. Born in New York City, Mr. Kraus studied at Juilliard. After serving in the Army band during WWll, he worked in tv, concerts, records and movies. Among the many highlights of his career, Mr. Kraus recorded the famous marimba riff in "Spanish Harlem" and played in the orchestra at Madison Square Garden the night Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to JFK. In 1978 Mr. Kraus moved to Houston. He worked for the Houston Symphony, taught at Rice University and played in the Houston Pops. Preceding him in death was his wife of 65 years, Janet Hoenig Kraus. Mr. Kraus leaves his daughters, Beth Johnstone (Edwin), Suzanne May (Donald), his grandchildren Andy Turboff (Amy), Jeffrey Turboff, Alexa May Rushing (Eric) and Chloe May (Daniel Rowen) as well as great-grandsons, Will Turboff and Jack Rushing. Funeral will be on Sunday, January 15 in Houston. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Juilliard School.
