R. BOOSE Obituary

BOOSE--R. Andrew. R. Andrew (Andy) Boose of Palisades, New York, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 30, 2025 at the age of 87. He was born on August 13, 1938 in Johnstown, PA, the son of Howard R. and Peggy Boose. After graduating from Georgetown University and Yale Law School, he served from 1964 to 1966 as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. For more than fifty years, Andy was one of the leading entertainment and media attorneys in the country, starting at the firm of Greenbaum Wolff & Ernst. He then worked for two decades as the managing partner of the boutique firm Kay Collyer & Boose, and then spent almost another 20 years as a senior partner at Davis Wright Tremaine. He represented a wide range of prestigious clients across all media, including the playwright John Guare, the classical violinist Itzhak Perlman and the author J.D. Salinger. For Mr. Salinger, he led a team of attorneys in successfully opposing the unauthorized publication of the author's unpublished letters - that 1987 case, Salinger v. Random House, spurred legislative amendments to the U.S. Copyright Act and remains an important precedent in determining the appropriate scope of "fair use" of an author's copyrighted work. His client roster also included such interesting figures as June Havoc and the actress Gina Lollobrigida. He developed a particular expertise in managing literary and dramatic estates, including those of Oscar Hammerstein II, Agatha Christie, J.R.R. Tolkien, Somerset Maugham, Helen MacInness, Ian Fleming, Jerome Kern, Edna Ferber, and many others. His service as trustee for the Hammerstein properties included the sale of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization to Imagem Music Group in 2009, one of the largest and most significant intellectual property transactions of that time. As a young attorney in the 1970s, Andy began representing the artist and author Edward Gorey. He served as co-executor and one of the initial trustees of the Trust established under Mr. Gorey's will and for nearly twenty-five years was instrumental in advancing Mr. Gorey's charitable vision, particularly in support of animal-rights and animal- welfare organizations. He served on the board of and was instrumental in the formation of the Bogliasco Foundation, a nonprofit organization awarding fellowships to individuals developing significant new work in the arts and humanities. Andy loved the theatre. He was legal council to the American Theatre Wing and the TONY awards, served on their advisory committee and cherished his role as a TONY voter. He also served for many years on the board of The Ensemble Studio Theatre. Andy is survived by Jeanne S. Boose, his wife of 57 years, his sons, R. Andrew Boose Jr. and John H. Boose, his daughters-in-law Bennah Serfaty and Erin Sumwalt, his grandchildren Amelie, Shane and Hudson, and his brother Howard R. Boose, Jr. and sister Peggy Burke.

i had the privilege and pleasure of practicing with andy at barovick konecky, then having him as my counsel during my subsequent GC career. he was a terrific lawyer but, more importantly, a fine gentleman...even in circumstances where the behavior of others around us was not up to his standard. i will remember him fondly and send my sincere condolences to the family.
