RAHMO SASSOON Obituary

SASSOON--Rahmo, died October 4 at home peacefully in his sleep of natural causes at the age of 97, cared for to the end by Renee, his devoted wife of 58 years. He was born into the ancient Jewish community of Aleppo, Syria in 1912. From 1936-1964, he lived in Japan as an independent businessman, where he founded the Ohel Shelomo synagogue in Kobe, and served as a leader of the Jewish community in Japan during WWII and after. He moved to Manhattan in 1964 with his family where with an open heart and generous hand he continued his life of integrity, honor, wisdom, courage and multilingual wit. He will be deeply missed by his wife and his children, Salomon, Andree and David; their spouses, Evelyn, Jean-Francois and Stephanie; his granddaughters, Nina, Danielle, Lily and Hannah. Much beloved and admired around the globe, he lived a storied life, and with his speech and actions improved the portion of the world he touched.

The highest aspiration of a father -- and his greatest gift to the future -- is children who care. That they love him as well is a double blessing. Against these measures, Rahmo Sassoon is an example for us all.

Dearest Uncle Rahmo, you are gone but will never be forgotten. You always made a point of saying (and acting) that, The first and most important quality of a religious person is to be a good person and good to your fellow man. That will stay with me forever.I try to practice it everyday with you in mind.

It is the offspring that guard and nurture the memory of the departed. We feel we have got to know you through the medium of David. The values that you lived, represented and espoused must be what we see in your son.

I am so pleased to have known a little about Rahmo through David's stories when I met him two years ago. In Brooklyn, overlooking the river, I listened to David's beautiful stories about his faher.I asked David just a few weeks ago how he'd progressed with his stories so etched were they in mind. May you rest in peace, knowing you were so loved by your son and his kin.

My husband Manny (he passed away in l986) may have known Rachman. I am sad to read of his passing and I know his good deeds will follow him forever. My condolences,

It is with utmost sadness that we join the family, friends, and associates of Rahmo Sassoon, z"l, in sympathy, surely, but also to celebrate a life well-lived. Truly, his professional range was prodigious, as was his kindness, and commitment to Judaism. May his memory be a source of inspiration and succor to all he touched; and may his sweet soul be bound in life eternal. Amen.
Sincerely, and with fraternal affection, Prof. Asher J. and Anna Matathias, Woodmere, NY

We knew of this man only through our friendship with his daughter, Andrée. But one always gets a glimpse of the parents by knowing the children, and so it does not surprise us to read of this man's courage and convictions, his pluck and enterprise, his warm heart and good deeds. May his wife and family continue to cultivate and long enjoy the blessings he sewed among them.

Andree, I am very sorry hearing you have lost the dearest person in the world. Beyond 30years, I remember his warm and kind feature clearly. Very impressively he treated me as a matured person.
Andree, I can't find any word to send you. But I can say he is now in heaven and have good rest. Please keep your mind peacefully.

Dearest Mrs. Sassoon, Andree, Solly, and David ~

What a lovely tribute to your husband and dad. He was a dear and special man and I have many fond memories of him from 'back in the day'. Knowing how much all of you loved him, this must be a terribly difficult time, and I hope you can find solace thinking of him in a peaceful place, smiling contentedly with that twinkle in his eyes, beloved by so many.

My love and heartfelt sympathies to all of you.

Dear Andree,

My love goes to you and your family. I know it is a very difficult time for you all.

I fondly recall joining your family in New York for Shabbat dinners and Sundy brunches when visiting from Philadelphia so many years ago. One of my fondest memories of your father was some 30 years ago when we were talking about business and he quoted the Talmud. It was the first time in my life that I had heard anyone quote the Talmud. I was impressed with his knowledge of the text and even more impressed that it was applied to a business - and not strictly religious - matter. Having become observant several years ago, I often think of my first introduction to the Talmud at your parents' Shabbat table and remember your father with great admiration.

May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion,

Andree, reçois toute notre sympathie et notre amitié dans ce moment difficile. Nous souhaitons te faire part de nos plus sincères condoléances ainsi qu'à ta maman et tes frères.

Yehi Zichro Baruch:
I saw Mr. Sassoon's picture in the New York Times. Not only was I impressed by his kippa, but by the good deeds, family, and gemilus chesed associated with him that will surely be a blessing to all who knew and loved him. I had just been reading that morning of the Sugihara transit visas for Kobe during the war years. They must have davened in Ohel Shelomo. May the New Year give you much blessing!
