RALPH SACCO Obituary

SACCO--Ralph. The Neurological Institute of New York mourns the loss of Ralph Sacco, MD, MS. After residency training in neurology and postdoctoral training in stroke and neuroepidemiology at Columbia, Dr. Sacco joined our faculty in 1989. He honed his expertise in stroke treatment and research aimed at addressing stroke disparities in multiethnic communities as founder of the Northern Manhattan Study. After assuming the Olemberg Family Chair in Neurological Disorders at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2007, he remained a close collaborator and friend. His professional acumen, combined with his compassion, dedication, and humility, inspired countless healthcare professionals, and led to his presidency of both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Heart Association. With his big smile and unfailing optimism, he made everyone feel special. Our sympathies to his husband, Scott Dutcher, and family. Friends and Colleagues from the Department of Neurology, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons

Heartbreaking to lose such a wonderful person. He was an exceptional neuroscientist, unparalleled leader, master and compassionate clinician, beloved mentor to many generations of stroke neurologists, and kind human being, whose indelible memory will always be cherished and continue to inspire us all. His exemplary accomplishments were only dwarfed by the generosity and courage of his soul reflected in the genuine kindness of his smile - one facet of his true greatness as a person that we will all sorely miss.

My sincere condolences to Scott, Mr. Sacco, Bess, and all of your family, on the loss of such a wonderful man. Ralph was among my closest friends in high school, and I will forever cherish the memories of our friendship, including our many late night telephone study sessions, and our History class camping trip in Gettysburg. He was a kind, generous, funny, and brilliant man even back then, and we all knew that he was destined to have a big and positive impact on the world. And so he has. Love to Ralph's family and friends.
