RAYMOND KELLY Obituary

KELLY--Raymond E. Artist, Sculptor, leader of the Rivington School and co- founder of the performance space NoSeNo, in NYC's Lower East Side, Cowboy Ray Kelly (Raymond Eugene Kelly) has died at the age of 79 on October 12, 2024. Arriving in New York City from his family farm in Texas in 1964 to study painting at the Art Student's League, Ray Kelly lived an art-filled and adventurous life ever since. He was Mark Rothko's painting assistant for three years while the Rothko Chapel in Houston was being built. He apprenticed with Herbert Ferber, taught fresco, at Skowhegan School and founded the Rivington School on New York's Lower East Side in the 80's. His leadership included a landmark legal case in which he obtained a lot for the Rivington School Sculpture Garden from the City of New York. He's shown work worldwide including P.S.1, Socrates Sculpture Park, and the Cooper Hewitt Museum. He leaves behind his wife, Anja, his sister Evelyn Kelly, his brother Don and wife Janis Kelly, his sister Elaine and husband Hal, his niece Stacy L. Dear Ray,
A few days ago my partner and I strolled past where No Se No was and where you lived for so many years. Your presence will be missed. RIP.

Ray made "rainbow machine" steel hoop sculptures that sprayed a mist for rainbow effect in sunlight. He brought one by the Ear Inn on Spring St NYC where joggers delighted in standing in the cool mist. Alas, one hot summer day, some gang with a pickup truck snipped the hose attached and stole the hoop away. May he still have one in heaven or wherever he is hanging out....

RIP Cowboy Ray, a true Lower East Side legend. Ray taught me to weld down in the basement at 330 Broome and I wouldn´t be a sculptor today without his influence. He liked to call himself my welding professor. Godspeed Professor Kelly, loved every minute I spent with you.

The Cowboy spent 80% of his life in the Bowery but Texas was never far. Metallurgy has lost a champion.

Uncle Ray could build anything you asked him to, and did! He was tough on the outside and a teddy bear on the inside! He was always sweet and very protective of me and I will never forget that! I owe him a lifetime of gratitude! He had a poetic insight that could see injustice when others could not and often called it out from a protective place inside him! He loved deeply and passionately and I love him for it! I miss you greatly, sweet Uncle Ray! May God´s rainbows bless you for eternity like you blessed so many of us! All my love, Stacy Lyn.

Condolences to Anja. Ray was a powerful artist and Recreate Residencies´ first artist in residence in Italy. His courage in fighting NYC for space for the Rivington School and his dedication to art and Anja are admirable. He was an important singular presence in the NYC downtown art scene. His tough ness, creative drive, character and integrity will be missed. RIP Cowboy, you are our inspiration.
