I never met Richard in person but had the honor of speaking with him on the phone not long after I had come to Bennington and Congregation Beth El to begin my work as rabbi here and shortly before his untimely death. Pamela later sent me a copy of Richard's book, which testifies to his courage, determination, and generosity of spirit, traits that were so powerfully evident to me during our brief phone conversation. I wish I'd been blessed to have a longer and fuller acquaintance with this exemplary man.

Dick and I never got to know each other well, yet we met many times through tennis and had a mutual interest in NJTL. I had planned to attend the memorial service this past Tuesday but came down with a bad cold - a result of too much heat and air conditioning the second week of the Open. His genuine interest in helping young people through tennis - whether it be in Vermont or through the USTA Foundation, and his advocacy for NJTL within the Foundation were actions that spoke louder than words. My condolences to his family and thanks to him for all that he accomplished.
