RICHARD BRILLIANT Obituary

BRILLIANT--Richard, an art historian for the ages, has passed away at the age of 94 on August, 8, 2024 in New York City. In electing Brilliant to membership (2005), the Academy of Arts and Sciences noted that he "transformed the field of classical art, opening it up to the new methods of historical and stylistic analysis." His insights and critical thinking helped raise the awareness of Greek and Roman art to a new generation of students. He enjoyed mentoring students and took great pride in seeing many of his former students pursue significant careers in the field of classical art history. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 20, 1929, Richard Brilliant attended Boston Latin School (1941-1947) and graduated from Yale College in 1951 with a B.A. in classical civilization. Brilliant attended Harvard Law School receiving his L.L.B in 1954 before returning to Yale to pursue graduate studies in archaeology and art history. He was awarded an M.A. in 1956 and a Ph.D in 1960. Brilliant's teaching career began in 1962 at the University of Pennsylvania where he became a full professor in 1969 and served as the Chairman of the Art History Department. In 1970, Brilliant joined the faculty at Columbia University as Professor of Art History and Archaeology and later was named the Anna S. Garbedian Professor in the Humanities. In 2004, Brilliant retired from full-time teaching and became Professor Emeritus. Brilliant published 11 books, numerous articles and other publications, and received countless honors including a Fulbright scholarship for study in Italy (1957-1959), and a Rome Prize from the Academy in Rome (1960-1962) which resulted in a definitive published study of the Arch of Septimius Severus. Many of his books including the Arts of the Ancient Greeks (1973) and Roman Art from the Republic to Constantine (1974) have been widely used by generations of students, and his books on visual narratives and portraits influenced innovative approaches to art history. He was editor-in-chief of The Art Bulletin (1990-1996). In 1951, just after graduating from Yale College, Brilliant married Eleanor Luria, who he first met at a summer camp when he was 12 years old. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Brilliant, of 73 years and their four children, Stephanie (Stephen), Livia (Tom), Franca (Seth) and Myron (Nady), twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was an avid cribbage player and a lifetime Boston Red Sox fan despite spending most of his life in New York. Shiva will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night at the Brilliant family residence in New York City. Contributions in Richard Brilliant's honor can be made to Avery Architectural and Memorial Library of Columbia University in New York City, or to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.

Richard was a neighbor and friend. I would often run into him, just when I needed some witty and elevated conversation. He was kind and endearing. It wasn't until I recently read his bio that I discovered that he must have crossed paths with my late father at Harvard Law School...and to think that they both lived in the same NYC building, yet I don't believe they met. I hope these two good souls will find each other in heaven. Richard, you will be missed.

Richard Brilliant was among my most important professors during my time in graduate school at Columbia University, indeed the sole reason why I minored in Etruscan and ancient Roman art. Though over three decades have elapsed, I still vividly remember my exchanges with him, for example when he visited my Art Humanities class and shook my hand after my lecture. He taught me more than he probably ever realized, and I remain grateful for his presence in my life. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and his many students.
May his memory be a blessing to us all.

I was one of his very first graduate students at the University of PA in the Fall of 1962 and one of his last when he was serving as my third dissertation adviser in 1970 just prior to leaving for Columbia. He was my personal taskmaster and I'm certain that the five B+s that I achieved in the five courses I took with him still stand as a record. But, because of him always raising the bar, I was forced to strive harder and harder. Now, pushing 87 myself and still working on another book to be published, with three already under my belt and having also published more than 60 articles in a variety of publications I can look back with a different perspective. This is not the place for me to list my other academic achievements, but with each accomplishment he alone always came to mind. My condolences to the Brilliant family. We have lost another great scholar.
Sincerely, Emeritus Professor of Ancient & Oriental Art History - Lewis M Greenberg

We met Richard and Eleanor in Paris and then we traveled south for a Viking River cruise. As we were chatting at our hotel, I learned of the book he wrote and got on Amazon then and there and ordered it!
Since I love to paint portraits, I told them I would be shooting some candid shots for photo references from which to paint. Thereafter, on the cruise, every time I saw Richard he would strike a pose to make me laugh! We found them such a very engaging and interesting couple that we visited them The next time we were in New York City.. I know Richard is dearly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.

Livia-I knew your father was truly accomplished, but reading this just blew me away. How proud you must always have been of him and the wonderful life he and your mother gave you. You were enriched all your life by the travel, livint abroad, the art, the writing and all that he did and was. His memory will be for blessing always. It is so obvious that you must be so like him, Livia, my brilliant, Brilliant friend.
