RICHARD DANZIGER Obituary

DANZIGER--Richard. Richard Martin Danziger died on November 9, 2024 of congestive heart failure in his home in Purchase, NY. Dick was born in New York City on February 18, 1938 to Louise Paskus Danziger and Frederick Simon Danziger. He graduated from Loomis School in 1956, Johns Hopkins University in 1960 and Yale Law School in 1963. He practiced law in New York City. After a trip to Japan in 1974, his love for Japanese art was sparked, especially art connected to the Japanese tea ceremony. His passion for learning translated into teaching as he spent time at Yale, Princeton and Amherst, and he was known for taking his students out for a slice of New Haven pizza during seminar sessions. Dick served as Chair of the Urasenke Tea Ceremony Society of New York, and of the Freer Gallery of Art. He was a trustee of Johns Hopkins University and later served on the Advisory Committee of its Berman Institute of Bioethics. He was a member of the Governing Board of the Yale University Art Gallery, served on the Asian Art Visiting Committee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and on the Visiting Committee of the Japan Society Gallery. Dick had a discerning eye, a droll wit and was fiercely loyal to his friends and family. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf at Century Country Club. Another passion was fishing for salmon, which he celebrated on his 70th birthday by getting a tattoo of his favorite fly, the Green Highlander. His favorite vacation spot was Barbuda where he gathered the whole family for over 40 years in matching bathing suits he personally selected. Predeceased by his son Michael Danziger, Dick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Peggy Block Danziger, his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Lucy Danziger, his daughter and son-in-law, Katie Danziger and Steve Horowitz, his daughter-in-law, Betsy Lind Danziger, his grandchildren James, Robby (Maddy), Charlie and Teddy Danziger, Jake (Jenna Flug), Jilly (Walt Laws-MacDonald) and Josie Horowitz and great-grandson Douglas Michael Danziger. Contributions in Dick's memory may be made to the Yale University Art Gallery.

Vale Dick Danziger. How blessed am I to have met and shared times with this generous wise polymath. It was his love of Japan and Japanese art that brought us together serendipitously in New York. Me from far away Australia and Dick with his love of great art and confidence in recognising new talent. His support of artist Maio Motoko so appreciated. I am yet to meet someone with such broad knowledge, confidence, and great taste. New York and the world of Japanese art will miss him greatly. Condolences to Peggy.

I have known Dick Danziger for more than 60 years. We both attended and graduated from Johns Hopkins together and served on many boards and committees, including Freer Gallery, Japan Society, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He and his dear wife Peggy were among the most important Japanese art lovers who influenced many museum collections throughout the United States, including Yale University Art Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We are deeply saddened.

May his memory be for a blessing for his family and many friends.
