RICHARD HIEGEL Obituary

HIEGEL--Richard J. The lawyers and staff of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP mourn the passing of their partner, colleague and friend, Richard J. Hiegel. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Christiane and daughters Michele, Adrienne and Nicole, and his five grandchildren. Born in Jackson Heights, New York on January 4, 1934, Mr. Hiegel received an A.B. from Columbia University in 1956, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1959, and received an LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1962, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Law Review. After graduation, he served as a law clerk to Justice John M. Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Hiegel joined Cravath in 1963 and became a partner in 1969, and served as Head of the Firm's Tax Department from 1987 until his retirement in 1996. His practice included advising on major corporate transactions and representing corporate clients before the Internal Revenue Service, the New York State and City Tax Departments and various federal and New York Courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. A renowned tax attorney, from 1974 to 1996 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association's Tax Section, and served as its Chairman from 1984 to 1985. From 1988 to 1998 he was a Trustee and a member of the Policy Council of the Tax Foundation in Washington, D.C., and from 1990 to 1998 he was a fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel. Mr. Hiegel served as Chair of the Board of Visitors and on the Dean's Council of Columbia Law School, as a Trustee for the Grace Church School, and as a Vice Chair for the Southampton Hospital Association's Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Quogue Field Club and served as Governor and President. A celebration of Mr. Hiegel's life will be held in the Spring. Charitable contributions in honor of Mr. Hiegel may be made to Columbia Law School or Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Dear Christy,

How sad it is to hear of Dick´s passing. It has been over 65 years since we last spoke. He was a great, talented and generous man.
May he be in heaven and share with us one day.
Blessings for you and your family.

Sincerely, Bill Hickey
