ROBERT AKERET Obituary

AKERET--Robert U.

Robert U. Akeret, of New York City, NY, passed on peacefully on November 12, 2016. Robi is survived by his four daughters, Kim, Julie, Liza, and Teal; and his four grandchildren, Molly, Nick, Will, and Sam. He was a successful psychoanalyst and author. Born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1928, Robi immigrated to the U.S. with his mother, Emmi Akeret. Robi received his doctorate from Columbia University and his certificate in psychoanalysis from the William Alanson White Institute, where he trained with Rollo May and Erich Fromm. He wrote five books: Not by Words Alone (1972), Photoanalysis (1975), Family Tales, Family Wisdom (1991), Tales from a Traveling Couch (1996), which was translated into seven languages, and Photolanguage (2000). He also appeared on several national talk shows, including The Tonight Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, to promote his books. Robi was a loving husband to his wife, Ann, who passed in 2013. He divided his time between his practice in New York City and rustic summers on Lake Champlain, where he was passionate about spending time with his family, horseback riding, sailing, and hiking. Robi had a twinkle in his eye and always had a story to tell and a curiosity about the lives of others. He believed that art and creativity are fundamental to powerful therapy and to an engaged and meaningful life. We miss him deeply.

How awfully sad! I am just reading your book on 28 June 2020 "The Man who loved a Polar Bear". I was sincerely hoping to meet you as I am loving it more after each page, but I guess that is not to be. I wondered why you mentioned European clients in your book but now know why aka being Swiss. I had lots of Swiss friends once. Well do RIP and I sincerely believe it is a great loss but perhaps you are in a better place. Anton

I was so lucky to have found Robi. He was a brilliant therapist. He helped me worked through problems that haunted me from childhood through my 40's. He lifted the cloud of depression and led me to the sunlight. He never let me down. There are no words to express the enormity of my gratitude.

I was fortunate to meet this gentleman back in 1975 when I was only 18 years old. He autographed the "Photoanalysis" book and I read it several times. This is an Excellent book and it works. He was a real genius in every sense of the word and I will never forget his visit. A truly remarkable man that I will miss forever and forever! May he rest in peace and God Bless him.

To the family of my friend, Dr. Robert U. Akeret. I will never forget your father and grandfather because, through his competency and care, he helped me work through problems that had been lingering since my childhood. I was 26 years old when he was my therapist in the year 1969. I am 74 today, March 28, 2017. Robi never failed to send me a Christmas card each year for 45 years sharing a little of his life and of his family, as I did with him of mine, in return. He had an egalitarian spirit and a soul filled with compassion and love. I will never forget him and neither will my daughter and her family because without your father's concentrated and caring efforts in my therapy with him, I may never have been able to have my own little family, which I wanted more than anything else in my life. God bless your dear father. I will love him forever, with enormous gratitude.
