ROBERT BELKNAP Obituary

BELKNAP--Robert Lamont. Professor Emeritus of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Columbia University, died on March 17 after a month of fighting idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Fortunately, he experienced no pain or discomfort, so he retained his signature smile, genial personality, and brilliant mind to the end. Bob has long figured as an internationally renowned Dostoevsky scholar, especially for his monumental studies of The Brothers Karamazov. Remarkable for the depth, breadth, and nuance of his knowledge, Bob wrote dozens of articles that elucidated diverse corners of 18th- and 19th-century Russian literature. His work always reflected a passionate, comparative quality, and he possessed encyclopedic knowledge of European ancient and modern literature. His ability to relate one work of literature to another will be amply demonstrated in his last book, Literary Plots (forthcoming from Columbia University Press). His was a beautiful, labyrinthine mind. Professor Belknap was magisterial--and fun--in the classroom. The intellectual excitement he generated among students was legendary. Figuratively and in reality, at 6'5", he was a towering presence. At Columbia for over fifty years, he championed the teaching of Literature Humanities and co-authored a book on the subject, Tradition and Innovation: General Education and the Reintegration of the University. Just last month, his colleagues and graduate students honored him with a festschrift, Teaching Nineteenth-Century Russian Literature: Essays in Honor of Robert L. Belknap. Bob was a good citizen of the many communities to which he belonged. He was chairman of the board at the Brearley School, which his daughters attended, and he served as president of the Giles Whiting Foundation. At Columbia, among other posts, he was department chair, director of the Harriman Institute, and acting dean of the College. His last position, Chair of the University Seminars, combined his zeal for interdisciplinary studies with his ability to get people to work together harmoniously, even if they warmly despised each other. Bob, a native New Yorker, was born on December 23, 1929. He was educated at the Buckley School, Philips Exeter Academy, and Princeton University, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1951. After serving in the U.S. Army, he completed his doctorate at Columbia in 1960 and also studied at the University of Paris and Leningrad State University. During summers, Bob loved the ongoing project of building his house on Cliff Island, Maine. There was a sense of nobility about Bob, and perhaps his best achievement was never to have faltered at being honest, fair, wise, of good will and good cheer and thoroughly decent. He was the perfect gentleman. His survivors include: his wife, Cynthia Hyla Whittaker, a Russian historian; his daughters from his previous marriage, Lydia Duff of Baltimore, Ellen Belknap of Portland, Maine, and Abigail Krueger of Boston; his stepchildren, Erica Whittaker of Windsor, England and Andrew Whittaker of New York; and his sisters, Louise Belknap Carter of New Haven and Barbara Belknap of New York. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University, on September 12 at 2pm.

I still think of him often. He was the best professor. The lessons he taught have lasted for a lifetime.

I had the honor of participating in the proseminar which Professor Belknap taught in the early 1980's for the graduate students in the Russian Language and Literature program at Columbia University. I was his student for 2 or 3 semesters. I never met a better teacher. He was always kind, patient, down-to-earth, funny, and brilliant. Even to this day, I recount lessons he taught me to friends and family. He truly enriched my life.

I still remember an evening in the fall of 1976 when Robert Belknap - then the acting Dean of Columbia College - dropped in unexpectedly to chat with students on my floor in Carman Hall during a strike by University security guards that followed a murder just a few steps from our dormitory. With the sincerity and humanity that few others could convey, Dean Belknap helped an anxious group of students to put these troubling developments in a broader perspective - and to know that he really cared about us. I also remember the animated and captivating way in which Professor Belknap brought Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky to life in a class that I took early in my Columbia career. Among all those I have met in the intervening 38 years, few have matched and none has surpassed Robert Belknap in epitomizing the most admirable qualities of a scholar, a teacher and a profoundly decent human being. I feel honored to have known and learned from Professor Belknap, and to have received his encouragement when beginning a diplomatic career that would be closely linked to the Slavic world that he loved so much. I offer my deepest condolences to Professor Belknap's family and friends.

They say, "Be a beacon." Bob Belknap was just that in our little Cliff Island community. Like a Zen roshi,he didn't
just teach with words, he taught by his full demeanor and his way in the world--
kind, cordial, accepting, highly receptive, insightful, and generous. For a young man in his orbit, he demonstrated a great love for his fellows and our shared Life. He taught me about presence and character, though I was never his student. -- Ted Reiner, South Portland and Cliff Island, Maine

We will miss our dear friend so much! He and his wife, Cynthia, added so much to our Cliff Island Community, especially our Historical Society. They chaired many events and contributed so generously to everything of importance on our island. Bob was a good friend to all. What a brilliant and interesting man he was! He will be sorely missed!

My deepest condolences to Cynthia and her family and Bob's family. As chair of a seminar at Columbia for many years, I had the opportunity to see Bob as a leader and admired his command and style of leadership. I know that I and the larger Columbia community will miss him and will honor his memory and many accomplishements.

Prof. Belknap was my advisor at Columbia and my teacher: our friendship thus began in 1971 and lasted many years. I always was "Yasha" to him. He was a titan in every way and is as alive in my memory now as when I first met him as a boy. Physical death happens to us all. But Russian literature is forever. And he is immortal. I send my love to his family.

Sincere condolences to Cynthia and all
Bob's family and friends. Yes, he did
indeed have a "signature smile," but he
was much more.
