ROBERT CONKLING Obituary

1918 - 2010

ROBERT L. CONKLING, 92, died at home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, in Larchmont, NY. The cause of death was prostate cancer.

Bob was married for 53 years to Sylvia Hoban Alexander Conkling, his true love, who died in 2000. Bob and Sally met by chance one stormy night on a night train from Pennsylvania Station to Philadelphia during WWII (a story he loved to tell) and were married in East Hampton, NY in '47. They established their home in Larchmont, NY, in '54 where they raised their six children.

Bob graduated from Manhattan College in '39, was a member of the men's track team, became it's captain, and was inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame in '91. Bob served in the United States Navy from '42-'46 on the U.S.S. Tattnall and on the U.S.S. Amick. He participated in the Invasion of Southern France, was awarded numerous decorations, including two bronze stars.

He graduated from Fordham Law School in '49 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in '50. Bob spent his entire career at the Manhattan law firm of Bleakley, Platt, et al., rising to managing partner. He was a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York; National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel (President, '76-'77); past president of the Larchmont Babe Ruth League and the University Club of Larchmont.

Bob is survived and deeply missed by his family: Robert, Jr., Peter (Nancy), Christopher (Ms. Simon McQueen), John, Jamie (Lillibeth), and Elise Galgano (Al) and his four grandchildren: John Granata, James Granata, Heather Conkling, Peter Conkling and one great grand-daughter: Jessica Conkling.

Viewing at Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont, 12/27, 2-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustine's, Larchmont, 12/28, at 10 a.m.

To Elise, Jamie all the Conklings;

I was sorry to hear about your Father's recent passing. Although we haven't seen each other in so many years, your family will always be remembered as the first family (and best neighbors) we met when we first moved to Larchmont back in the '60's. Your Dad was always a towering figure and was highly regarded and deeply respected by those of us in the neighborhood; specifically my family. I remember my Dad always telling us how accomplished your Dad was and how impressed he was with him as a successful Attorney and all of his leadership credentials. I also fondly recall all the times he drove the 3 of us to school at MHS in the morning; keeping the car warm and waiting so patiently for us while we scrambled to get to school on time. I can't imagine how we would have made it there without him. And yet, in the midst of all that High School ritualistic drama, he never had anything but pleasantries and kindness to offer us every day. The East Garden Rd. memories would never be the same w/out the Conkling family there - and I will always be thankful for the neighborly friendship your Father extended us. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss...

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Robert, Sr... thru the stories of his son Robert, he will remain very much alive to me! It was clear he lived a rich and full life, and was blessed to be surrounded by so much love from family and friends. Wishing his family peace... and hoping good memories provide some comfort during this difficult time. Aimee Leone & family

Dear Uncle,

I will miss your ever present smile and hearty greeting. I knew that you were always in my corner as an advocate for admission to Manhattan College and a comforter in more recent matters. My world will be poorer without your cheerful presence yet it was enriched through your love. Now you join those who have gone before. I know they are waiting with open arms.

All,
It was with great sadness that we learned of Uncle Bob's passing...("Robert L."" as Gene used to call him).
We have so many fond memories of times spent in New York City, Larchmont and the Jersey Shore. We hope that you, like us, are comforted by his enduring love and that he is now reunited with Sally.
Jaime, your comments reflect my admiration in his faithful calls to me ( with my diminished hearing is quite a fete).

With abiding love to all,

Dear Dad,

I will sorely miss our weekly Sunday phone calls--when I would phone you at High Noon every week. How we would make each other laugh (with your--like Mom's--inimitable laugh that came straight from your soul). You were a vaudevillian at heart, 'cause you loved the old jokes, such as:

Patient: "Doctor, it's hurts when I do that." Doctor: "Well, then don't do that!"

Make 'em laugh, Dad.

Love,

Chris

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

Dad,

Thank you for being so kind, thoughtful and generous.

Whenever I called you to chat and we did so frequently I would ask you: "How you doin'?" You're reply: "I'm doing better now that I hear your voice." That was always so nice to hear. Well, I know that I'll be doing better as long as I listen for your voice.

Thank you and Mom for everything!

Rest in peace (send my love to Mom).

Love,

Jamie

Hey Pop, Everytime I look up at the stars/moon I will be thinking of you. Forever my Dad here on Earth and in Heaven. I love you and miss you so much already. Give Mom a big kiss and hug for me. Now you can dance and sing with her all you want.

Your Loving Daughter,
