Robert Lauer, MD, Ph. D. Obituary

1946 - 2022
Robert Charles Lauer, MD, Ph. D., of Upton, MA, formerly of Basking Ridge, NJ, died on August 17, 2022 after a courageous 4-year battle with prostate cancer at the age of 75. He was born on November 15, 1946 in Morristown, NJ to William Lauer and Hope Chapman Lauer and spent most of his early life in Madison, NJ. He graduated from Madison High School '64, Bucknell University '68 and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He then spent two years as a teaching assistant at Seton Hall University. In 1970 he went to Columbia University where he was a teaching assistant and graduate student in Microbiology/Immunology. He received his Ph.D. in 1973 and started medical school there at P & S from 1974-78, with internship, residency and cardiology fellowship at Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. In 1983 he joined a cardiology practice in NJ and continued doing the work he loved best-treating and caring for thousand of patients. He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the AMA and a Castle Connelly Top Doc in NJ for over 10 years. He spent 34 years devoted to his specialty, affectionately known to his NYC ER patients as "Dr. Bob". From 2010-2012 he spent two years developing a cardiology clinic for thousands of low-income people in Artesia, NM. He returned to NJ and spent the next 4 years as an employee of Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in an office in Manahawkin, NJ. Rob was an avid sportsman- in high school he played baseball and in college he wrestled. He played squash with his son Eric and golfed with his son Sean. He loved fishing, the Jersey shore, stereo electronics, BMWs, the New York Times crossword puzzles, opera, the Yankees, the Eagles band, Billy Joel, and was an accomplished pianist who played up until his death. But his most cherished accomplishment is his two sons Eric and Sean, whom he adored and always boasted of their successes.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Wernick) of 50 years; and the proudest father of Eric and wife Emily; Sean and wife Erin; his most special granddaughter, Maya, who brought him the brightest light in the last four year; his brothers Jack Lauer (Carol) of Winston-Salem, NC and Dick (Jeanne) of Stamford, Ct.; and his sister-in-law Rosanne Wernick of NYC.

As per his wishes, Rob was cremated, and his ashes will be spread at the Jersey Shore where he spent hours and hours fishing

I worked with Dr Lauer in the Manahawkin office. He was a wonderful doctor. He was always a gentleman. He helped me immeasurably with advice about patients and with life. I was sad when he left our office but I knew spending time with his family was the most important thing to him. He will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Lauer Family.

My sincere condolences to the Lauer family. I was in the class of 66 at MHS making Bob two years older. I have vague recollections that he and I had contact during the two years together at Madison High School. Rest In Peace Bob.

Rob was such a good friend, his loss is hard to imagine. I am so thankful that Kris and I were able to visit with Rob and Phyllis in July - he was alert, mobile and conversant. That is the memory that I will cherish. Wether as roomie at Bucknell, playing pool or golf, dining as couples, Rob brought joy in my life that I will always remember. Rest In Peace Rob.

I worked in the Cardiology department at SOMC (formerly SOCH) while he worked at the Deborah office in Manahawkin. Great guy, we shared fishing stories. He will surely be missed. I have cardiologists phone numbers in my phone because I needed to contact them. I loved my working relationship with the drs and nurses and the office managers. I miss the people, happily retired. God Bless
