MORGENTHAU--Honorable Robert M. It is with profound sadness that Congregation Emanu-El records the passing of Robert M. Morgenthau, days away from what would have been the 100th anniversary of his birth. His life was long in years and brilliant with accomplishment. He stood as a giant in the legal profession, uncompromising in his integrity and unflinching in his pursuit of justice. Rarely has our nation known so great a public servant. Not only will he be remembered for his extraordinary career as the longest-serving district attorney in New York County, but as well as for the distinguished years that he occupied the office of United States Attorney for the Southern District. In addition to his official public duties he served for decades as president of the Police Athletic League. The JewishWorld will long remember his role in the creation and leadership of the Museum of Jewish Heritage. We at Congregation Emanu-El will forever cherish his many years of creative service on our Board of Trustees. To his beloved Lucinda, children and grandchildren and all the members of the family, we express our sympathies along with our gratitude for the life that he lived and the memories he bequeaths.

I had the privilege of serving Mr. Morgenthau for nearly eighteen years as an assistant district attorney. His death, even days shy of his official 100th birthday, still came as a shock. The words spoken by his seven children yesterday were moving, as was the entire ceremony. You are all in my thoughts and in my prayers. Much has been written about your father's legacy by the countless people like myself who he guided and mentored in his professional life. His family -- his wife and children and grandchildren -- evidence perhaps a more important legacy. Thank you for sharing him with us during his long and productive lifetime. Thank you for sharing with us the stories of the man who guided you all at home. May his strength continue to strengthen you during these sad times, and always.

I had the awesome opportunity to work with Bob in his capacity as Chairman of our wonderful Police Athletic League. In the summer of 2017 the Mayor of Beijing invited the Police Athletic league to send a chorus to Beijing to participate in the Beijing Joyful Dance Festival as the representative of America, a 10 day event that included concerts at the Bird's Nest, the Museum of Natural History and other famous venues. Bob's propitious decision to green light the project provided a life changing opportunity for the 9 PAL kids who made the trip and who previously had never been outside of the five boroughs of New York City. There are 40,000+ students who are beneficiaries of the PAL programs and Bob was their enthusiastic champion to the day of his passing. His transforming influence on so many lives will long survive his days on our planet.

With our condolences to Lucinda and all of the members of the Morgenthau family and our gratitude for your love and support to his life well lived.

I am writing (son Michael) these comments on behalf of my Dad, Seymour Bard who was Mr. Morgenthau's Administrative Chief from 1980-1987 at the NY District Attorney's office. My Dad is critically ill or he would have wrote this himself. Our families thoughts and prayers are with the entire Morgenthau family especially Lucinda. My Dad always talked fondly of Robert and he was shocked at his passing. He talked about the wonderful times he had at the Fishkill Farm and working with Robert at the DA's office. Such a great public servant to the city of New York who has left a great legacy to us all. He will be greatly missed. May the family feel comfort in this time of sorrow.

To have had the opportunity to document for posterity a man who was such a part of New York and national history is something I will treasure. Those of us in the in-house press corps who covered the Criminal Courts and the D.A.'s office enjoyed one of the last of the old-school media/government relationships, that was casual and cordial, but professional and proper. Whether at a small roundtable chat or a major announcement, it was an honor to photograph himand to be in his presence. I've got my hat, Boss.

My father served under you on the USS Harry F. Bauer in the battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. My father was an Electricians Mate 2nd Class and was only 16 years old at the time. My father told me that the ship was hit by a 500 pound bomb that never went off.He always mentioned how great of an officer Robert Morgenthau was especially under stressful situations. The Harry F. Bauer won the Presidential Unit Citation for extreme bravery in the Okinawa campaign. Robert was a true american hero and a great man!!!

An amazing public servant with an impressive career spanning many decades.
Robert the Boss was a one-of-kind prosecutor. He was built to go after fraud and as such pertained to corrupt politicians, bankers and white collar misfits. I recall him being called invincible and he was indeed impressive, a Sinatra of the courtroom. My sincere condolences to Lucinda and the family.
