ROBERT SHAPIRO Obituary

SHAPIRO--Robert S. The staff and trustees of Northwell Health mourn the loss of Robert (Bob) Shapiro, our devoted friend and former Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. For over 30 years, Bob played a major role in making Northwell what it is today. From the deregulation of hospital reimbursements to the creation of our ever growing and evolving health system, Bob laid down the financial foundation needed for our continued expansion of providing the best healthcare to our communities. His innovative ideas and strategies earned him respect on Wall Street, along with helping Northwell earn A-level bond ratings from the nation's three largest credit agencies. Bob was an extraordinary man and an esteemed member of the Northwell family, who believed deeply in our health system and its mission. As a dedicated leader, mentor, and gifted finance professional, Bob was a kind, humble and compassionate person who was beloved by his staff and colleagues. All of us at Northwell honor the memory of our dear friend Bob, he will be truly missed. We extend our heartfelt and deepest sympathies to his wife Raweya, his two children Laura and David, his two grandchildren, Andrew and Emily and to all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable man. His lasting legacy at Northwell will always be remembered. The family will be having a private service. Donations in Bob's memory will benefit the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research's Center for Autoimmune, Musculoskeletal and Musculoskeletal Disease. Just heard and so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. We worked together about 30 years ago when Northwell was just Northshore. It was just starting to become a health system with it's first nine mergers. He was always practical and helful even providing guidence on the golf course. He will be missed!

Our heartfelt condolences to Bob's family (especially Rhonda). Karen and I knew Bob to be a warm, kind, and generous man with nothing but a good word for everyone. Being with Bob was like being with an old friend, even the first time you met. He was a special man who will be sorely missed.

Bob was my boss when I first started working at North Shore University Hospital in 1991. he was a great boss, strict, but always would crack us up. over the years we had a great working relationship. we would tease each other about bowling - he had a few 300 games (me none) so I would always tell him what a "horrible" bowler he we. he would crack up. I will miss him. a very nice man.

I’m deeply saddened by this news. This man had a greater impact on my life then anybody else. I met Mr. Shapiro at a holiday Christmas party a lost and desperate person looking for a direction in life. This man met with me for years coaching me and guiding me to do things and take risks I never thought in my wildest dreams I could do. To him he was just being a good leader a good person... but to me I listened and took his words to heart. I was always in disbelief sitting in a room getting time with the CFO of the company. I didn’t feel I belonged and he always listened and cared. He is forever someone I will remember, someone who I needed and am grateful to have met. His biggest advice to me that I hold to my heart is “ end of the day it’s how we treat people”. He treated me like I mattered that I was important and worth something. I’ll never forget this man not only for his career advice but for simply just making me feel I mattered. To his family I’m so sorry. And to Mr. Shapiro I say thank you. Thank you for making a impact on my life you’ll be missed but not forgotten.

Bob, Ronda and I worked together in our earliest days in the healthcare field. As we all moved along in our careers, we managed to remain friends and colleagues for 45 years. He was a good man, who was bright, kind, considerate and very much a family man!

The world is a better place for having him with us, given Bob’s dedication, insight, leadership and caring, at Northwell and when with his family, friends or colleagues!
May he RIP and always be remembered!
