ROBERT STOVALL Obituary

STOVALL--Robert Henry. Love of family and a deeply held Catholic faith were core values for Robert Henry Stovall, Sr., a resident of Sarasota, Florida. He was a well-known Wall Street investment analyst who died peacefully holding Linda's hand on December 3, 2020. Mr. Stovall was born on February 16, 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky to Agnes Catherine Hinkle and Harold Samuel Stovall, an ambitious couple who relocated to New Jersey when Robert and his sister Joanne were young, settling in Short Hills. Robert's family focus, Catholic beliefs and deep respect for education were nurtured in his early years progressing through graduation in 1943 from Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange. Robert began on Wall Street as a messenger for Reynolds & Co., where his father was an executive, during summer vacations in the early 1940s. A deep sense of right and wrong during World War II prompted Robert to enlist in the U.S. Army before reaching legal age, and after boot camp in Texas he served as a medic in Italy. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with a BS in Economics in 1948, Mr. Stovall studied Political Economy at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he met his future wife, Inger (nee Bagger). He earned an MBA in 1957 from New York University. Robert joined E. F. Hutton and Co. in 1953 as a junior analyst, working his way up to Partner for Research in 1961. Later he was Research Director of Nuveen Corporation before rejoining Reynolds as a Partner in Marketing and Research. After 16 years with Dean Witter Reynolds, he became President of Stovall Twenty First Advisers, Inc., before moving to Prudential Financial and Wood Asset Management in Sarasota, Florida. Mr. Stovall was best known as a panelist on the PBS television show, "Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser" where he was one of Louis' analytical "elves" and was elected to that program's Hall of Fame. He was a frequent commentator on financial TV and radio, and as a regular columnist for such publications as Forbes and Financial World. Mr. Stovall and his late wife Inger had four natural children; Sten, Sam, Benedikte, and Robert, Jr. - and six grandchildren, as well as two "Pedro Pan" children from Cuba - Henry and Eduardo Del Riego - who have enriched the family since 1962. After being widowed in 2003, Robert remarried and enjoyed over 16 loving years of marriage to his surviving wife, Linda Wheatley-Stovall, a fellow Kentuckian, NYU MBA degree-holder, was the principal in her executive search firm after leaving corporate financial officer positions. Robert was predeceased by his beloved sister, Joanne Stovall Perrot, in 2009. Mr. Stovall's activities included being a member of the NYU Board of Trustees and an adjunct NYU professor of finance for 25 years; a regular lecturer at Stetson University's George Investment Program and a director of the National Council on Economic Education. Mr. Stovall was also Chairman of the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School and was a Life Trustee. Private interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey. A memorial service will be held early in 2022.

Mrs. Stovall was my teacher at Boca Ciega HS in 1965. She often talked about her husband. I was impressed to read that there were 3 generations of Stovalls in economics. Nice American family. RIP.

I remember Robert Stovall from my time as a rookie broker from E.F.Hutton in Memphis in the mid 1960s, when enrolled in the NYC Hutton training school. He would lecture our class and those of us with appreciation for his unlimited wit, would hang out after he spoke to devour his every word. I loved following his writings my entire career and am sorry I did not know he was part of the Mississippi Stovall family. I was raised in the same small town, with Colonel Howard Stovall being one of my father's best friends. My sister introduced her college roommate, who married Carter, Colonel Stovall's son, and our families farmed similar properties for generations in the "Delta". I would have loved to have made that connection, but consider Robert Stovall a legend in his day. God Speed. We love reading Sam Stovall and will appreciate it more now that we know the rest of the story.

I'm so sorry to be catching up so late to Bob's passing. May his family always be blessed with only the sweetest of memories.

Bob's parents and and childhood must have been amazing because he was incredibly kind and generous and giving, apart from obviously being exceptionally bright.

How do I know this? Because of the little stories I remember Bob telling me.

When I first met Bob, I loved plying him for stories about the stock market's 1960's Go-Go years. But Bob went back even longer, and was proud to note he used collect data on weekly rail car loadings for stocks tips and economic forecasts while at E.F. Hutton in the 1950s.

I was reading Nicholas Lemann's The Promised Land about the Great Migration around the time I first met Bob, while interviewing him at Bloomberg News.

I mentioned to Bob that there was a prominent Stovall family -- plantation owners? planters? -- mentioned in The Promised Land as living in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and asked him if they could be any relation.

Oh yes, they decidedly were, Bob said, launching into a lovely explanation of the Stovalls of Clarksdale.

I don't recall why, but I learned in our chats that Bob adored Bob Evans Sausage Gravy, and later I would jokingly ask whenever we spoke if he'd enjoyed any recently.

After a few years Bob admitted, "Oh, no," he couldn't anymore, as his wife no longer allowed him to indulge for health reasons. Bob wasn't happy, but he suffered it.

We never suffered Bob. We reveled in his warmth and kindness and intelligence. Farewell.

My memories of Bob are from 1948-1949 at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus. He was a prankster. I remember he flew a Confederate flag over the house where he was living and the police came to take it down. He told me when he was younger he would shoot out lamplights with his BB gun. One time we went to a party hosted by the American ambassador to Denmark at the time, and she thought Bob was charming. Bob was very bright and I recall he was a member of Mensa. My sister had a friend in the Navy who went to school with Bob and thought he was a bit of a smart aleck. When we were dockside saying goodbye and ready to embark, this friend cautioned Bob, saying “I hope this trip wises you up.” Bob’s life shows just how wise he was. He was a good man and I so enjoyed being his classmate.

Sam Stovall and family
For many years on Wall Street Week your father introduced, educated and entertained many in the investing community. His accomplishments are still in evidence with your ability to carry on the Stovall legacy. The January presentations to the NYC Chapter of the AAII are always much anticipated. Condolences to all in the family.

Sam and Stovall Family,
I first met Bob when I worked at the SIA New York District and he started Twenty Firstst Advisors. We spent many years working together when he served as Chairman of the New York District SIA Economic Education Foundation . His personal values and high ethical standards as well as his warmth and sense of humor ingratiated him to all who knew him and had the pleasure of working with him. He will be sorely missed.
Sincere sympathy,
