RUTH SILVERMAN Obituary
noted photographer, curator, and author, died at home in Berkeley, California, on April 10 at age 78. Though her lifetime accomplishments are innumerable, she is best remembered for her groundbreaking work at the International Center of Photography in New York in the 1970s and 80s where she curated more than 100 exhibitions, as well as for her award winning book "The Dog Observed" among many others, and as a fine art dealer in San Francisco where she introduced many important Asian photographers to American audiences. A lifelong friend to dogs, she spent her final months producing a photo-based auction of museum quality work to benefit the San Francisco SPCA and the Humane Society of the U.S. Ruth had an abundance of wit, charm, warmth and a deep intelligence which drew friends from all walks of life. She is an irreplaceable treasure. Friends are invited to gather for a memorial on August 30 in California. Donations can be made to the San Francisco SPCA.

Ruth was a dear friend I met when she first moved to San Francisco. We remained close after she moved to Berkeley and up to the time of her death. I fondly remember her wit,, humor, and frank opinions of what she liked and did not like. I always knew how she felt about things. I will always remember her kindness and love of the dogs she loved.

Ruth was my first mentor. When she was our neighbour in Washington DC, I would spend hours with her and her dogs in her studio and on her porch, drinking tea. She was such a talented, caring person who was my protector at a difficult time my my life. I wish we had stayed in touch. RIP Ruth.
