SANDOR BALINT Obituary

BALINT--Sandor. The Metropolitan Opera mourns the death of Sandor Balint, a violinist in the Met Orchestra for 58 years. In addition to playing in the Orchestra's first violin section, Sandy was elected a member of the Orchestra committee in 1959 and served as chairman for contract negotiations from 1977 to 2000. An admired and beloved colleague, Sandy will be sorely missed by his coworkers. We offer our sincerest condolences to his wife Joyce, also a member of the Met Orchestra, and all his family and friends. Peter Gelb, General Manager James Levine, Music Director

Joyce, I recall many happy times fiddling and biking with Sandy at Yaddo in 1949. My heart goes out to you. And I cannot imagine the Met 1st violin section without him. Les Dreyer

Sandy was my first brother-in-law, and he set my standard for new family members. He, like my sister, took a strong interest in all of my life's millestones. He was, and always will be, an inspiration to me. I, as well as the rest of my growing family. We all were shocked and saddened by the news, and all wish to express our sympathy and sorrow.

Joyce, Wes gave me the shocking news about Sandy this afternoon. A wonderful man and wonderful brother-in law, I was always so proud of his accomplishments, just as I am proud of you. He will be missed by our family.
