SANFORD GOLDSTEIN Obituary

GOLDSTEIN--Sanford Martin. Sanford Martin Goldstein (May 14, 1964 - June 27, 2023) has peacefully transitioned after a valiant and prolonged battle with ALS. He passed at his home in Tarrytown, NY at the age of 59. He is survived by his wife Marla, his children Steven and Sarah, his brothers Stuart (Shari, Jacob, and Sam) and Daniel (Victoria, Dylan, and Sophie), and a sweeping tapestry of cousins and close friendships; he now joins his father William and his mother Rhoda. Born in Brooklyn, Sandy was raised in Rochester, NY. He revealed a gifted mind for mathematics, logic and philosophy, while also relishing the goofiness of Monty Python and the swagger of The Clash. Sandy's love of sports started at an early age when he saw Julius Erving play at the Rochester War Memorial Arena, began fervently following Pete Rose and the Big Red Machine, and fell in love with golf; having played for the Brighton High School varsity team and Wesleyan University. Sandy graduated from Brighton High School in 1982, and Wesleyan University in 1986, where he also played club rugby and built lifelong relationships with his Delta Tau Delta fraternity brothers. Sandy began an investment banking career in 1986 that spanned from the colossus of Wall Street to the shorelines of Bermuda. Sandy was known by his colleagues for his humor, warmth, and personable approach in an ultra competitive industry. Sandy met the love of his life, Marla, in 1987. His relentless optimism and gleeful sense of humor quickly winning her over and were married in 1990. As a father to Steven, Sandy was both a dutiful mentor and a joyous buddy. The two watched New York Giants games with ritualistic and religious fervor. When Steven became a featured columnist for the Giants on Bleacher Report, Sandy was quick to make a username and enthusiastically comment on every post. As a father to Sarah, he was an unwavering protector, friend, and on-field advocate, coaching Sarah, a prodigious soccer goalie, for over a decade and was universally beloved by parents and players alike. Tragically in 2019, Sandy was diagnosed with ALS. He was steadfast in positivity and continued to serve as an active father, husband and brother while continuing to work. He raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for ALS research and for his "pALS" who did not have the financial resources he did. He fought with dignity and grace and never gave up. Sandy provided comfort to all those blessed to know him with his kind and generous spirit. He was a man who often found himself as the smartest person in the room yet never compromised his humility. His memory will forever be a blessing, and his legacy will be carried on by an arena- sized crew of confidants and comrades. Dear Marla, Steven and Sarah, I am deeply saddened for your loss of a wonderful husband and father. I am in pain because Sandy was a beautiful friend and to think of a world without him in it, is beyond heartbreaking. I was a colleague of Sandy's when I joined MBIA in 1999 and I always looked up to him as a mentor despite him being less than a year older than me. His kindness was infectious and he was always a gentleman.

First and foremost he always spoke of the love of his family, that was of the utmost importance. His professionalism and integrity were beyond reproach. When he found out that I had lost my job in May 2008, he hired me to work with his firm, HMVP Corp. that August. I was extremely touched by his concern and is something that I will never forget, as he helped me keep a roof over my head.

When Sandy walked into a room, he lit it up with his charm and wit. He could talk sports one minute, then discuss world events in the next breath as he was well read. One of my fondest memories was when a bunch of "MBIA'ers" went to the Town Hall in New York City to see Cheap Trick in concert. His enthusiasm for life was exceedingly infectious. I will always love Sandy Goldstein. Until we meet again. Godspeed. Errol Arne
