Sara Myers Obituary

1954 - 2016
Sara Ellen Myers, of New York City and Kent, Connecticut died on the morning of August 16, after a determined fight to live the best life she could, in spite of the cruel devastation of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).
Diagnosed with this vicious, terminal illness in 2010, Sara threw herself into researching the disease, and became a ferocious advocate for aid in dying. She was an eloquent champion, testifying for Compassion and Choices in front of the Connecticut legislature on house bill 5326 and, as lead plaintiff in Myers v. Schneiderman, a case brought by End of Life Choices, seeking to establish aid in dying as a right in New York. Ignorance, fear and the slow wheels of government made it clear change would not happen in the time she had left, but she continued to speak out, hoping her voice would help others in the future.
Sara was born in Olney Illinois to Robert and Betsy Myers, now of Lakewood Colorado. With a B.A. in costume design from the University of Northern Colorado, she moved to New York, where her first job was sewing sequins on elephant blankets for the circus. She moved on to work for the Children's Aid Society and what was then The Federal Defender's Unit of the Legal Aid Society. However, Sara found her true passion as an educated practitioner of structural integration, She reveled in her ability to help clients gain, or regain, freedom of movement without pain. When she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2010, the irony was not lost on her.
Sara met the end with grace and humor, living up the promise she made -never to feel sorry for herself and to greet each day with curiosity about what was to come.
She is survived by her parents, her sister Ann Calley, and her husband Charles Ross. In death she joins her beloved brother Craig. In lieu of tears or flowers, Sara would expect that we raise a glass and continue the fight for the right to die with dignity.

You have been away now for 6 years but are never forgotten .... My sister Kate wrote 2 years ago that she would 'see you on the other side' .... I'm sure you were there to greet Kate when she transitioned and the two of you are once again dancing and laughing together. May you rest in peace, dear, sweet (yet wickedly funny) Sara. You are remembered and always loved..... Toni xoxo

I often think of Sara. My memories of her are triggered by many things such as our board work together for the International Association of Structural Integrators, walking the streets of NYC, mutual friends, etc... I loved her bright mind, quick wit and compassionate heart. I love that she fought to make change. I will always love her.

You continue to be deeply missed my dear, sweet, hysterically funny friend! Can't believe so much time has passed since your transition. Seems like only yesterday. I'll definitely see you on the other side. In the meantime, you're always in my heart.

Dearest Sara you will be deeply missed. My deepest sympathy to Chuck and your family. We had so many wonderful years with our dogs in the park. Every afternoon. There are no words really. You were such a kind and generous person and this illness was so cruel. I will miss you dearly.

I never met Sara but was in contact with her through PatientsLikeMe and Facebook. She was an outstanding advocate for those with ALS as well as those who wanted choice at the end of life. I admired her fight and determination from thousands of miles away (London). We often had an "online" drink together and I will drink to her memory tonight. Wishing those she has left behind peace and comfort.

Strong, funny, honest Sara. You were the friend to have when you needed a kick in the pants and an honest appraisal of what was going on. You used these traits in the fight of your life. You also used your wide open empathy for those who were not as strong as you to fight for them. I am proud to have been considered one of your friends and my heart goes out to your family, including your NYC "family"Miranda, David and Eric.
