My dearest uncle Makram, I grew up on stories from grandpa and grandma of u and how brilliant and smart and an overachiever you have been. You have always been an inspiration for me and had my back whenever I needed u and u were my idol.
I want you to know that those we love don’t go away and that they walk besides us every day , unseen, unheard and always near and I will be missing you every day. Until we meet again. Please say hi to my beloved father.
Love always Ayman.

My prayers and love to Paula and Adam at this time of loss -- Makram, and Paula, were a treasured part of my childhood in New York. The world is diminished.

As the days and weeks pass, I thought my daily routine will take my mind away from the memory of the last few hours I had spent with my beloved Brother, my best friend, in the intensive care unit at NYU hospital. I reveled in talking to him, giving him the Seven-Up, giving him a few spoons of protein shake, washing his mouth, and massaging his back to help his lungs expand as he struggled to breath despite taking 100% oxygen by face mask and the nasal cannula. They have told me that his lungs were getting worse from Covid-19! I left his room at 5:00pm with the intention to come back the following day as I had been doing since he was admitted to the hospital. It shook me to the core to hear that he has passed away at 5:30 pm, only a half an hour after I left him. I still cannot believe it nor to accept it.
It brings back memories of when he left Egypt to come to New York to pursue his Doctorate of Education at Colombia University. I was about 12 years old when I used to sit and cry with my mother every night about missing him being away from the family. He was our shining star. He was full of love and caring for all the people around him. He was a force of inspiration to his generation and the generations that he taught and guided during his teaching career at Colombia University, NYU, and Pratt Institute. My beloved brother was a pioneer of his field in library science as seen in his thesis from Colombia “The Matta Report,” which became the foundation for replacing massive paper card catalogs with computerized catalogs that now serve The New York Metropolitan Libraries. The data base includes more than 20 million holding. His work is responsible for saving the publishing industry millions of dollars. He also worked as a consultant in information and records management for the United Nations.
He was the most sensitive, loving man; full of life and funny. My brother made all those he came into contact with better. His persona extended beyond his family, but to the greater community with his selflessness and charity. My heart is full of deep sadness and grief that nothing will ease this feeling. Only when we meet again and sing together again and talk together every evening as we used to do since he retired from his Dean position at Pratt institute.

We still cannot believe that the great Uncle Makram has passed. We will always remember his sweet smile and beautiful singing voice. I don’t remember ever seeing him upset or angry at anyone. He was always the life of every party, whether it was 2 people or 100 people. We are so sorry that he never got to meet Alexander and Amelia. But I am so happy that he was able to come to our wedding. We pray for his family, and that they might find peace and keep his memory Alive forever. May God bless his eternal soul and may we be reunited with him one day.

Love,
Todd, Monica, Alexander, and Amelia Heghinian
