Seymour Cohen Obituary

COHEN-- Seymour Theodore, San Antonio, FL. Formerly Westbury, L.I. passed away August 2, 2009, age 84. He leaves his beloved wife Natalie, three daughters from a previous marriage, Diana, Helene and Lisa, four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter, brothers Gilbert and Joseph and three nieces. Owned and operated Optical Retail stores in Manhattan and Long Island. In WWII served as Staff Sergeant, radio operator and waist gunner in B-17s with the U.S. 303 Bomb Group stationed in England flying 30 missions over Germany. In retirement volunteered at the Air Power Museum, Amityville, L.I. There befriended another volunteer Gunther Bier, a native of Germany who became an American citizen and whose hometown in Germany was bombed by the 8th Air Force when Gunther had been a teenager. Such is the power of forgiveness and the human bond which Seymour exemplified.

Frank X. O'Brien

Dear Mrs. Cohen,

Please accept my deepest, heartfelt sympathy for your loss.

Seymour flew with my father, Bill O'Brien, on Daddy's Delight several times. He shared the few photos he had of them together with me.

I'll miss him, as he was a connection to my own late father's wartime past. Imagine our mutual surprise when we discovered he knew my father! I still remember vividly the night he came to the house and saw a picture of my Dad standing underneath that B-17, the same one he flew in so many years ago.

I like to think they've met up again and are right now concocting some boyish mischief.

Warmest regards,
Frank X. O'Brien

Although we only knew each other a few short years, I will never forget our roundtable at Panara with all the boys. There will always be a place for you at that table.
Rest in peace my friend.

It was a pleasure to meet and get to know Sy as a fellow volunteer at the AAM. His sense of humor and his self deprecating manner were to me a hallmark of a member of the "Greatest Generation".

A great pleasure to have known you and sad to see the last flight happen. You will always be in our hearts at the museum and your rotten bombing of Gunther will always bring a smile as you smiled at that story.

I regret that we never met, but Seymour's life story is a great inspiration. Great men are those who accepted life's challenges and dealt with it to the best of their ability.
Seymour was one of those men

As manager of the American Airpower Museum while Seymour was a volunteer, I can say without reservation that he was a gentleman among men and a living asset to our institution. He served his country with valor and in later years he enriched all of our lives.
Together with Guenther Bier he reached out across time and continents to bring people and generations together with a better understanding of history, forgiveness, and ultimately friendship. When Guenter was 11 years old he was a resident of Leipzig Germany, the target of Seymour's last bombing mission. 60 years later the two former enemies climbed aboard a B-17 for one final mission as close friends.
I feel honored to have had him in my life as a colleague and friend.

No more Flak Sy

Blue skies dear friend.

I only knew Seymour for a few years. We talked about three things: his work as an optician, his time in WW2, and his love for his wife. He had a good sense of humor about all those subjects ,and I know he will be missed.

Seymour,

Thanks for all you did as a member of the Greatest Generation for the Next Generation. It was a pleasure to know you at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale.

Blue skies and fair winds.

Seymour was not only a driving force at the American Airpower Museum but, with his passing, his ability to educate a new generation of Americans about the courage required to defend freedom remains very much alive for his spirit is woven into the fabric of this institution.

I recall the evening in November, 1981 when I spoke to Seymour for the first time on the telephone from my dormitory room. I honor and respect him for being companion and husband to my mother for the better part of thirty years. Our relationship was more of mutual friendship than stepfather/stepson.

The fond memories of his life will last the rest of my life.

So long but not goodbye my friend...

My sympathies and condolences go to you and your entire family. I am new to the museum but do I realize that another member of "The Greatest Generation" is gone from us. May he Rest in Peace.

I will always remember talking to Seymour at the Museum. He used to tell me stories about the war, and his aircraft, Daddy's Delight. When he moved to Florida, I remember we gave him an embroidered jacket with his aircraft name and squadron on the back. I remember he told me it wasd his favorite jacket.
Godspeed, Sy

Last Farewell to Seymour. You now ended your very last mission on this earth. It took a terrible war that we finally met 8 years ago after you were above us on 6 April 1945 and went through hell for the 30th time. I always listened to your mission reports and your smile made it a great day. We shall carry on to thell the world about the many sacrifices you made to bring peace in Europe. We shall meet again some day from now and knowing you now found peace yourself from not being well. Auf Wiedersehen! Guenter

What can I say about my big brother? I loved him. I didn't realize how much until I erupted into tears on Monday. These family relationships go so deep that only death, like an earth tremor, can remind you.
