SIDNEY SOLOMON

SOLOMON--Sidney, 93 of Boca Raton, FL passed away peacefully on February 6, 2019. Sid was born in 1925 in Coney Island (Brooklyn), NY to Dora and Charles Solomon. He lived a full, success- filled and colorful life. He was a simple, direct and unpretentious man who never forgot his humble beginnings. Sid was a pious man who practiced his Jewish faith in his own way. Sid served with the U.S. Army during WW II. He was stationed in the South Pacific, where he ran the USO entertainment section. Under the stage name of Sid Marlo, he was an award- winning mentalist and Past President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He appeared several times on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. In 1947, he and his family founded Abilene Heating Oil Co. in Coney Island. Abilene, Inc. still thrives today as a legacy business. In 1991, Sid retired and moved to Boca Raton with his first wife, Elayne, who passed away at the age of 61 that same year. Thereafter, Sid met Wendy Kafka who, like Sid, was originally from the Coney Island area (Sea Gate). The relationship grew and blossomed. Sid and Wendy (affectionately referred to as Wendulah) married in 1993 and were inseparable until Sid's final breath. They lived a full life together, residing at St. Andrews Country Club in Boca. Sid is survived by his wife Wendy Kafka Solomon, brother Max Solomon, children Ronni Macklowitz and Jeffrey (Vicki) Solomon, grandchildren Laurie (Marc) Selfon, Daniel (Allison) Macklowitz and Samantha (TJ) Quatroni, great grandchildren Zachary and Ella Selfon, Nate and Quinn Macklowitz and Ryan Quatroni. Special thanks go to Mercedes Ramirez, who has been of tremendous support to Sid and Wendy for the past 25 years. In Sid's final months, he forged a warm relationship with Dexter Blackwood, his caretaker. Finally, for more years than can be remembered, Alex Volyand, a long-term employee of Abilene was always considered to be Sid's "adopted" son. He cherished Alex's dedication and loyalty. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, NY on Sunday February 10 at 1pm.
