SPENCER FOREMAN Obituary

FOREMAN--Spencer, M.D. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Montefiore Medical Center and the entire Montefiore community are deeply saddened by the passing of Spencer Foreman, M.D., known as "Spike" to friends, family and colleagues. Dr. Foreman retired as President of Montefiore Medical Center in 2007 after more than two decades of leadership that set the hospital on course to become a national model for managing the health care of an underserved urban population. The hospital's Board of Trustees named him President Emeritus the following year. Under Dr. Foreman, Montefiore established leading innovative social programs including an adolescent AIDS program, a medically based Child Advocacy Center, one of the nation's largest school health programs and one of the first lead poisoning prevention programs. Montefiore distinguished itself as an early adopter of electronic medical records and entered into innovative managed care arrangements with insurance companies to improve quality and outcomes. Dr. Foreman strengthened the Montefiore Medical Group, an extensive system of ambulatory care centers located throughout the Bronx and Westchester, securing Montefiore's place as a fully integrated, regional health care system. To better serve the children of the Bronx, Montefiore opened the now internationally recognized Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Foreman's legacy is reflected in Montefiore's expansion and sustained commitment to making a difference beyond the walls of the hospital. In 1993, as Chairman of the Association of American Medical Colleges, Dr. Foreman established an annual award to recognize academic medical centers that go beyond traditional health care to meet the needs of their communities. In 2007, the organization renamed the award in his honor. We extend our condolences to Dr. Foreman's wife Sandra, their children Cori (Barry) LeVine, Todd (Tracy) Foreman, Cheryl (Kevin) Boyarsky, Andrea (Steve) Kline, and their ten grandchildren. Services will be held at 1:30pm, Thursday, May 30, at the Westchester Jewish Center, Palmer and Rockland Avenues, Mamaroneck, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Steven M. Dear Sandi,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Spike's passing. He was a wonderful mentor and always generous with his time and assistance. He was intelligent, "street smart" with an insightful sense of humor - truly a potent combination. I will always remember his wonderful smile as as he approached our annual BRANY beach party astride his motorcycle with a 6 pack of non-alcoholic beer. He is and will be missed.

Foreman Family

Mrs. Foreman,
Dr. Foreman's' will and determination to live and be happy was an inspiration to everyone he encountered.

Sandi and family, Elizabeth and I are sorry we are unable to be with you at the services for Spike. Over the years, our friendship has been something we both treasure. More recently, we've especially enjoyed our annual trips to Florida and some adventurous outings when Spike and Conroy had a new favorite restaurant to share....good times filled with laughter and Spike's wonderful sense of humor.
Spike's professional accomplishments cannot be overstated. Above and beyond his work at Montefiore, he provided years of leadership to the Association of American Medical Colleges where his vision expanded the horizon of that organization. He was a mentor and an inspiration to me and I will miss him greatly.

Spike also was Chairman of the Board at his and my alma mater, Ursinus College. His leadership contributed to a remarkable upward trajectory in our liberal arts college that was unprecedented. While I met him in that professional context, my husband and I have come to know Spike and Sandi personally and love them like family, Spike was a committed, devoted person to people and causes. His expansive personality was unique and his intelligence and wit rare. He was my friend and mentor and I miss him already.
His and Samdi's valiant fight and courage these past years will always inspire me, as will their lifetime together. Jim and I send our sincerest condolences to the Foreman family.
