STANLEY EPSTEIN Obituary
EPSTEIN--Stanley, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.C. Beloved husband, father, and "Pop" to nine grandkids, Stanley Epstein was a caring cardiologist, mentor and friend of too many to count. He died early Sunday morning, November 7, 2021 at home on the Upper West Side with his wife, Sylvia, by his side. Stan was born in Brooklyn on March 12, 1933, to Esther and Louis Epstein. He was brought up with two sisters, Florence and Barbara, who adored him despite the long- standing joke that their brother was "raised as an only child." As a young and proud Brooklynite, Stan could be found playing ball in the schoolyard or leading children's services at Pri Etz Chaim, his neighborhood synagogue. A graduate of James Madison High School where he served as school president, he lived by the school's motto, "Be Proud of Madison and Make Madison Proud of You." It was at Brooklyn College where he met the love of his life and future wife of 63 years, Sylvia Heisler. A graduate of Chicago Medical School, Stan went on to become a distinguished physician and founder of the Westchester Cardiology Group. He was a Full Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he earned the Preceptor of the Year award for his teaching. After practicing cardiology for 46 years, he served as an expert witness, defending doctors, for another 13 years, while continuing to teach and read EKGs. Aside from his family, which he referred to as "his wondrous bounty," Stanley's work as a doctor was his greatest source of pride. Devoted husband to Sylvia, father of Joel, Susie (Miles Rubin) and Debbie (Gordon Henry) and grandfather to Gabe, Lizzy, Oliver, Julia, Charlie, Spencer, Clara, Avery, and Theo, Stan was an avid golfer, chess-player and sailor who cherished life with his wife and their three children and nine grandchildren. He was known for generously helping others and caring for anyone in need. A founding board member of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, Stan was also a member of the Board of the Brookdale Foundation and the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy (SCAA). Stan's funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 10:30am at Riverside Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Stan's honor to SCAA.
