STEPHANIE ROSE Obituary

ROSE--Stephanie, abstract painter and portraitist, died a year ago, March 23, 2023, in Basel, Switzerland. She is remembered on this anniversary by her family and her many personal and art-world friends and admirers. Her large-scale paintings fuse lush abstract surfaces with recognizable images which often conjure theatrical space -- curtain, chandelier, chair; in her portraits, direct observation yields vivid likenesses, which are enlivened by witty abstract intrusions. A lifelong New Yorker, she exhibited frequently in New York galleries, including Susan Caldwell, Betty Cuningham, fiction/ non-fiction, E.M. Donahue, Dactyl Foundation. Relocating for about a decade to Hudson, N.Y., in the early 2000s, she exhibited in galleries there as well. In 2012, the Albany Institute of History & Art presented a major survey of her portraits. She taught or lectured at numerous colleges, universities and art institutions. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Schub Kamir, and two grandsons, Maximilian and Theodore Browde.

I met Stephanie and encountered her art through a friend, just a few years ago. I enjoyed knowing her and send condolences for the loss of a loved one. An interesting woman, good to her friends, and a skilled artist with a unique and recognizable style, I sympathize with those who mourn her loss. I would have liked to know her better, and for longer.
