STEVEN GREENBERG Obituary

GREENBERG--Steven M., MD The administration, trustees, and staff of St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, in Roslyn, NY, mourn the passing of Steven M. Greenberg, M.D. Dr. Greenberg was part of the institutional fabric of St. Francis, having joined the Hospital in 1991. Dr. Greenberg was a leading cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital's world renowned Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Center, and was the first physician in the United States to implant the Accent RF pacemaker. He guided early research on the use of pacemakers and implantable defibrillators to treat both heart failure and high-risk cardiac patients. His expertise in transvenous ICD implantation provided an alternative to open heart surgery for countless patients. Dr. Greenberg was revered for his medical expertise, and respected for his pioneering work in the field. Throughout his tenure at St. Francis Hospital, Dr. Greenberg was appreciated and loved by thousands of patients whose lives were dramatically impacted by his care. Admired as a benevolent community pillar, he was a participating surgeon for Gift of Life International, volunteer for the Nassau County Medical Society, Trustee of the Village of Old Westbury, and an honored physician affiliate of the United Jewish Appeal-Federation. He was also honored as a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and authored numerous articles for several publications including the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Greenberg's compassionate spirit, as well as his leadership and good humor will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and patients.

It was April, 1991, when I passed out from acute arrhythmia. My own cardiologist, Dr. Philip Gelber, recommended that I undergo an EPS procedure at St. Francis in preparation to a pacemaker implant. My wife and I were both very nervous and very scared. We were introduced to Drs. Levine and Greenberg who proceeded to reassure us that all would be all right. He told my wife, as he pointed to our 3 young daughters, that if she wanted to see me walk them down the aisle I should get the implant. I was one of his first implant patients at St. Francis and I did indeed walk all 3 down the aisle many years later. RIP Dr. G., they don't come any better than you.

I was saddened to hear, unexpectedly, of Dr Greenberg's passing. I attended many of his informative lectures at The DeMatteis Building after my father had a defibrillator installed by Dr Hoch, (Dr Greenerg's colleague at St Francis Hopsital).
Dr Greenberg's medical explanations and advice to so many attendees were vivid and invaluable, he was a vast reservoir of medical information for hungry patients who needed his advice for their own health and survival... And now HE (Mr Greenberg) is gone.... How ironic... May God rest his soul. I myself and many will miss him and his medical knowledge...I am eternally grateful for his medical explanations.

I was saddened of hearing the passing of Dr Greenberg. My husband and I were lucky to have heard him at one of his many seminar's . So informative and what a great speaker . We learned many things at the seminar about defibrilators. His office visits were always warm and he was a very kind and funny Dr. At the same time. A very upbeat man . We are sorry for his loss . My Mom had many heart issues and knew Dr. Greenberg. He took care of her for many, many years. She would say that he had a great sense of humor and cared for his patients. When I read the Newsday article that he had passed, I was extremely sadden. I only met him just a few times but I could see the kind of doctor he was. Genuine and true. You must know that he touched peoples lives in ways you can't imagine. My Mom lived many, many years because of his caring and attentive ways and made each doctor visit that she had to do that much more easier knowing she was seeing him. The visits were like that because of who he was. The heavens have an angel up there. I know my Mom and him are chatting now. Peace to his family and you have my deepest condolences.

I met Dr.Greenberg at St.Francis Hospital in 2001, I brought my mom there because she was very sick with heart disease. Dr.Greenberg saved her life, I know she would not have had much longer to live without his care. My mom always called him her angel...and he truly was an angel on earth. Mom and I will miss him so very much. Our condolences to his family and friends.

I also was friends with Steve at Stony Brook and just loved his sense of humor and how smart he was! Then, years later, when visiting with my Mom at Saint Francis as she was recovering from by-pass surgery, I heard Steve's voice (now 20 years since the last time) behind the curtain at an adjoining patient's bedside. After he was off shift, we talked for a while over coffee - he hadn't changed a bit. Still the sweet, funny, brilliant guy he always was - cleaned up a bit and dressed better. RIP Steve!
