Being very sad, that Professor Stewart Stehlin died, I am thankful, that I knew him since he met my father Prof Ernst Deuerlein (1918-1971) Universität München, in 1971. Since then he often stayed in my mother's house, we made Trips with him and Jerry, admired his German, learned from him about German history, the catholic church and Classical music, did visit him in his apartments in New York.
We miss Stewart.

A great man, a good friend and wonderful teacher, has passed away. When thinking of Stewart, it is good to remember that he was part of Historical Profession´s `apostolic succession´. Meaning
that Stewart Stehlin was a student of Hajo Holburn, who in turn was a student of Fredrick Meinecke, who in turn was the pupil at University of students of Ranke. So in short, if you studied under him, and got a doctorate, then you are linked into this splendid historiographical chain.
Enough said for now.

Stewart was several years ahead of me at Rutgers University and a fraternity brother.
Since he grew up in New Brunswick , he would stop by the house on occasion even when he was attending graduate school at Yale.
It was always a pleasure to see him.
He was warm and gregarious and one of the smartest people that I have ever met.
May his memory be a blessing.

Professor Stehlin deepened my already interest in history when I was an undergraduate student at NYU in the mid-1970s when I had him for European Diplomatic History. He was a wonderful teacher, scholar and historian. May he rest in peace.
