STUART KAPLAN Obituary

KAPLAN--Dr. Stuart Lee. Stuart Lee Kaplan, M.D., died in the early morning hours of May 23, 2022, six months following a sudden brain hemorrhage from which he never regained full consciousness. His adoring wife, Joan, never left his side. Dr. Kaplan was a brilliant child psychiatrist, psychopharmacologist, and scholar with a long and distinguished clinical, research, and teaching career who loved his work and continued to actively see patients. Dr. Kaplan served as University Professor and Director of Child Psychiatry and Residency Training at leading university medical schools and was the author of over 75 scientific articles and presentations. He wrote the book, "Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder: How Bad Science and Good Public Relations Created the Diagnosis," which influenced the field and addressed the overdiagnosis of this disorder in youth. Dr. Kaplan was born on May 29, 1939, in Washington, D.C., and was a graduate of the George Washington School of Medicine. He completed residencies at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and served for two years as a psychiatrist and Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Kaplan was the embodiment of integrity and intellect, a deeply principled, compassionate, very funny, and truly special and remarkable person. He loved sailing, skiing, philosophy, poetry, modern music, and most of all spending time with his beloved wife, Dr. Joan Busner Kaplan, son, Lawrence, daughter-in-law, Liba, and granddaughter, Natania. He is survived also by his beloved parents-in-law, Philip and Naomi, sister-and- brother-in-law, Carey and Dave, and nephew, Jake. He is predeceased by his brother Philip Bernard Kaplan, and his parents, Leonard and Ann Kaplan. In keeping with his lifelong passion for justice for all who are vulnerable, contributions in Dr. Kaplan's memory may be made to the ACLU
